Endless Mode (Layton gen)
Title: Endless Mode
Length: 332 words
Prompt: Layton v. Tetris on the Professor Layton (Anon) Fan Meme
Pairing: Layton gen
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "Professor, we're beginning to get worried," Flora said, her eyes on the ceiling as if he were doing something indecent. She wouldn't even be bringing this up, but clearly someone needed to.
"Professor, we're beginning to get worried," Flora said, her eyes on the ceiling as if he were doing something indecent. She wouldn't even be bringing this up, but clearly someone needed to.
"Uh-huh," the professor said.
"Luke says that you have been forgetting to eat and sleep!" she implored him. And bathe, she didn't add. She'd never seen the professor with whiskers before, and it was really sort of scary to realize how deeply he'd fallen into its clutches.
"Uh huh," the professor said.
"We think it's time to put the puzzles down," she said slowly, as if she were speaking to an idiot. The professor was no idiot-- the thought was ridiculous!-- but he wasn't listening either.
"Uh huh," the professor said.
"Hershel!" Flora said, much too sharply, scaring herself. Layton glanced up, and seeing her face, he pressed a button she'd never noticed before. The infuriating music stopped for the moment, and he blinked.
"Yes, Flora?"
"Wouldn't you like to take a short break?" she implored. He blinked again, slowly, like someone coming up out of a deep sleep.
"But..." he said, "it's endless mode..."
"Why don't you leave it on pause, then?" she said kindly. After a long moment of consideration, feeling the brim of his hat, the professor nodded, and set the game down gently on the chair next to him. Flora rushed forward and took his arm as though he were an invalid.
"I need someone to sign the bill for the milkman, and we're nearly out of tea," she began. "Luke is running your bath and you have rescheduled appointments for most of the morning. Two recent letters contained word puzzles and you actually have some sort of ancient skull in the parlor that a Mr. Schneider left for you..."
The professor only glanced back once as they left the room. Luke stood at the end of the hallway, and when they passed, Flora nodded, just slightly.
With any luck, the game would be in the river before the professor finished his toilette. He wouldn't even hear the splash.
