Excerpt: Zira raised Kovu well, but she did not quite love him. She loved no one but Scar, and even as a cub the boy understood this.
Zira raised Kovu well, but she did not quite love him. She loved no one but Scar, and even as a cub the boy understood this. He let her lick him, to teach him to hunt, to train him for his future.
But she did not love him. She mothered him, and it was enough, in a desert land devoid of pity, food, and love. It was enough to survive.
She sang him to sleep in a bed of lies, her mind always on the goal and the lion he would become. It was no wonder his brother was jealous and crazy, bent over and scruffy with obsession, claws turned inward.
He could only be a dutiful son as long as duty stretched, and it broke not long after he looked into Kiara's eyes.
