Cues (Tomoyo/Meiling)
Title: Cues
Day/Theme: Oct 6 // are you now or have you ever been
Series: Cardcaptor Sakura
Character/Pairing: Tomoyo/Meiling; mentions of Syaoran/Sakura
Rating: G
Excerpt: Daidouji Tomoyo was not a lesbian. She had never been a lesbian. She had always been practical, however, and choose to fall in love with souls instead of bodies.
"Well, are you?"
The woman leaned forward and Tomoyo watched her breathe two breaths as she tried to decide how to answer the question. After a long moment, she shook her head.
To her utter surprise, the woman blushed, tangling a finger in her hair self-consciously before rising from the chair and practically fleeing the office.
Tomoyo sighed and ran a hand through her hair. She wasn't sure who'd begun the rumor that she was a lesbian, but if she'd known, they would have been fired. Instantly. She had no time for this.
She hadn't known there were so many lesbians in her company. She made a mental note to look into domestic partnership benefits and got back to work.

Daidouji Tomoyo was not a lesbian. She had never been a lesbian. She had always been practical, however, and choose to fall in love with souls instead of bodies. Which wasn't to say that she didn't envy those who could easily put a label on their sexuality. But she'd never liked any of the labels they had for people like her.
Bisexuals were promiscuous in most people's minds; omnisexuals were pagan-sounding. Pansexuality had the same problem.
Tomoyo just loved people-- Kinomoto Sakura, the boys she'd dated in high school, the girls she'd dated in college.
She just loved, really.

Not that she was getting much love recently from either gender. Despite her beauty and intelligence, there weren't many who dared approach Daidouji Tomoyo, daughter of the imposing Daidouji Sonomi, and CFO of Daidouji Toys. A rumor running concurrently with the lesbian one was the rumor that she had an arranged engagement with one of her mother's colleagues. Between the two, Tomoyo didn't date much.
She didn't always mind. A routine was a good thing, after all. She was taking her lunch in a cafe near her office and contemplating the afternoon's meetings, just like most other days, when her routine was interrupted.
"Daidouji! Daidouji!"
Tomoyo broke from her daydream and blinked at the woman who had practically flown into the cafe and approached her. She was tall and willowy like Tomoyo herself, with dark hair cropped short and a charismatic smile. She reached down and took Tomoyo's hand familiarly.
"It's me! It's Li Meiling, Daidouji! How long has it been?"
Meiling's hands were pale, the nails painted a jaunty red, and she held Tomoyo's hands with such easy joy that Tomoyo had to grin. She hadn't seen Meiling in probably three years, since Syaoran and Sakura's wedding, and she hadn't expected such a change from the girl.
Meiling stood tall and proud, her jacket cut in a masculine fashion, though it curved sweetly over her breasts, which were tucked into a bright red turtleneck that matched her fingernail polish. She was wearing tweed jeans and dark loafers, and she had a confidence in her that Tomoyo remembered from their childhood. Meiling had always believed she could do anything, and she could convince most people they could do anything too, with just a smile.
"Li Meiling!" Tomoyo said, rising to hug the girl, and when they pulled back out of the hug, Meiling lifted a hand to brush Tomoyo's hair out of her face, her gaze soft. The moment lasted for only a second, but her fingers brought a flush to Tomoyo's cheeks.
Tomoyo smiled, wracking her brain for the last time that meeting someone had made her feel like this, so suddenly alive, and she couldn't recall. So she took Meiling's hand and invited her to sit down and tell her why she was back in Japan.
Meiling brushed her leg against Tomoyo's under the table, and Tomoyo began to feel something new growing. She didn't have to be a lesbian to have a girlfriend, after all.
"Are you--" she began to ask, but Meiling leaned forward and finished the sentence with a kiss that answered the question quite nicely.
