Autumn Magic (Spinelsun gen)

Title: Autumn Magic
Length: 615 words
Prompt: fic or treat for [livejournal.com profile] suppis_tenshi
Pairing: Spinelsun and Nakuru gen
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "You don't understand the magic of October!" Nakuru protested one unseasonably warm afternoon after he had refused to help her rake leaves. The last time he'd helped, she'd piled them all up and jumped into them, dragging him along with her, and though wrestling in the crackling leaves had been somewhat satisfying, it had taken him ages to get properly clean again.

Nakuru's birthday was in October for a reason-- she'd chosen that month because it was her favorite time of the year. The leaves were beautiful, the afternoons were long, and it was the time for ghost stories, bonfires, and a new school year.

Spinelsun, on the other hand, didn't spend a lot of time out of the house, simply because the logistics were difficult, and because he was a homebody. He watched the leaves turn colors from an appropriate window and reminded Nakuru, Eriol, and Kaho to take their coats when they left the house. But it wasn't a big deal to him.

"You don't understand the magic of October!" Nakuru protested one unseasonably warm afternoon after he had refused to help her rake leaves. The last time he'd helped, she'd piled them all up and jumped into them, dragging him along with her, and though wrestling in the crackling leaves had been somewhat satisfying, it had taken him ages to get properly clean again.

"Hmph," he said, and though she'd made a disappointed face, she'd wandered away and he had returned to his book, crisis averted.

Or so he thought. Later that evening, she woke him from a pleasant nap by whispering, "Suppi-chan~!" loudly in his ear. He'd jumped in shock, fluffing his fur and arching his back, and she just giggled.

"Yes, what is it?" he asked sourly, settling back into a sitting position and gazing up at her.

"Let's tell ghost stories," she said. "That will get you in the Halloween spirit!"

"No one here really celebrates Halloween," he tried to protest, but she picked him up (gently, because he was her brother, after all) and dragged him into the living room, where Eriol and Kaho were already waiting.

"Would you like to go first, Nakuru?" Eriol said, laughing a little at her enthusiasm, and she nodded and released Spinelsun, who curled up on the arm of Eriol's chair. He still wasn't entirely sure about the idea, but he was here, so why not?

Two hours later, the woodfire was burning low and Kaho was yawning. Between them, they'd told about ten stories, and some of them were quite good. Everyone had liked Spinel's retelling of Dracula, made better by his knowledge of the original book, and his take on The Island of Dr. Moreau had made Nakuru squeal quite loudly at the scary parts. When Eriol suggested it was time for bed, no one made much protest.

Spinel wasn't sure if this was the true meaning of the season, but it had been a good romp, at least. He liked spending time with the family. When Eriol got up, Spinel hopped down into the seat of the chair and stretched lazily, wishing his creator and his creator's girlfriend a good night.

Nakuru was oddly quiet. She did some final tending of the fire before she put it out, leaving the room completely dim and silent. Spinel was half-asleep, in fact, before she spoke.

"Suppi-chan?" she said hesitantly, her hand on the doorframe.

"Hmm?" he said, not bothering to protest the nickname he couldn't seem to shed.

"Can... can I sleep with you tonight? I'm.... a little scared," she continued in a small voice.

"I thought you liked scary stories," he said, blinking.

"I do, but... Eriol's last story was really good, and, well..."

He shifted in the chair and then made the short flight to her shoulder. In a rare display of affection, he rubbed his head along her chin.

"You can't thrash around, you know," he said in answer. "Or I'll have to bite you."

"Okay," she said, smiling, and patted him on the head before they went to her room.
