Holidays with You (Akko/Mari)

Title: Holidays With You
Length: 337 words
Prompt: fic-or-treat 2008; Girlfriends for [livejournal.com profile] socchan
Pairing: slight Akko/Mari; Mari/boyfriend
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "We could dress up like they do for Obon over in America," Akko continued past the awkwardness, her excitement flaring. "I was reading about it in my doujinshi! You could be Robin and I could be Batman."

About.com says, "Obon is not a Japanese national holiday, but many people take vacations during obon so that they can visit their hometowns." It's a festival for the dead and the closest Japanese equivalent to Halloween, and it occurs near the end of August or early September.

"Well, if your boyfriend is out of town... we could go?"

Akko's voice was high at the end because she knew she was pushing back on some part of their friendship that hadn't quite been repaired. Her voice was querolous, but luckily Mari's smile was bright.

"That's a lovely idea," she said, and if her hand lingered on Akko's elbow a little too long, neither of them would say so, though the blush rose on both of their cheeks.

Best friends, just best friends.

"We could dress up like they do for Obon over in America," Akko continued past the awkwardness, her excitement flaring. "I was reading about it in my doujinshi! You could be Robin and I could be Batman."

Tamamin laughed, interrupting. "Batman and Robin are both guys. And it's not Obon in America, it's Halloween. It's not during summer, Akko-chan."

Akko shrugged, looking a little too intensely into Mari's eyes. She looked away, giggling a bit.

"Let's just wear yukata, okay?" Mari said, picturing the edge of flesh revealed by a deep neckline, the soft shoulderblade, before pushing the thought away.

Best friends, just best friends.

"Okay," Akko replied, still happy, and she took Mari's hand, leading her off to plan for the festival.

Tamamin blinked and laughed. Those two were always thick as thieves. She was glad that Mari having a boyfriend hadn't changed anything between them, watching as they swung their arms loosely as they spoke.

The afternoon was long, the sunset gleaming on Akko's hair, and Mari was trying very hard not to think about how beautiful Akko was, her hand heavy in hers.

At least they would have Obon, just the two of them. That was all she needed. Really.
