Excerpt: Tomoyo paused, hesitating on the threshold, and then the two of them both looked up at the cheerful greenery, and then back at each other. Before she could talk herself out of it, she leaned forward and gave Sakura a peck on the cheek.
"And back then, the first person you kissed, you had to marry," Yamazaki said, and the group of children looked at the mistletoe in his hand as though it were a bomb. Eyes wide, Sakura turned to Tomoyo.
"Is that true?" she asked, and Tomoyo giggled.
"Judging by Chiharu-chan's face, I suspect not," she said, pointing over at the angry pig-tailed girl.
"Yamazaki!" Chiharu yelled, "stop it with all of this nonsense. Do you think I would have kissed you if it meant I had to marry you?"
"Of course, darling," Yamazaki said fondly, holding the greenery above her head, and before she could protest again, he swept her up into an embrace and kissed her forehead. She blushed brightly, and the girls all sighed. So romantic...
But soon afterwards Terada came into the room and they all took their seats. Sakura gazed out the window at the snow flurries swirling onto the playground, her mind elsewhere. Christmas was Yuki's birthday, and she had to think of something to get him. Something that might garner her a kiss...? She blushed at the very idea and buried her head in her assignment.
For once, Tomoyo was just as distracted as Sakura, picturing for a moment a white wedding, two women in beautiful, Tomoyo-designed dresses. She didn't believe Yamazaki's story, of course, but it was a dream...
Before he left for lunch, Yaamzaki tacked the mistletoe up on the doorframe. Their next teacher would remove it, doubtlessly, but it was a good excuse to kiss Chiharu again, and everyone giggled. Sakura and Tomoyo barely noticed. They were talking about what Sakura should get Yuki for his birthday, and they were deep in conversation when they moved together towards the classroom door, the last two to leave.
Tomoyo paused, hesitating on the threshold, and then the two of them both looked up at the cheerful greenery, and then back at each other. Before she could talk herself out of it, she leaned forward and gave Sakura a peck on the cheek.
"Ho-ee?" Sakura said, flushing deeply, and Tomoyo grinned.
"It was just a story," she reminded as they walked into the hallway. "You don't have to marry me."
Sakura laughed easily and reached out to take Tomoyo's hand as they headed for the cafeteria, swinging their arms together like the best of friends. Tomoyo's lips burned with joy.
"Merry Christmas, Sakura-chan," she said, and Sakura didn't stop smiling.
