The Peace That Was Meant to Be (Spinelsun gen)

Title: The Peace That Was Meant to Be
Prompt: Christmas 2008 theme: Christmas is for lovers (people who love one another); Spinelsun for [livejournal.com profile] suppis_tenshi
Series: Cardcaptor Sakura
Character/Pairing: Spinelsun gen
Rating: G
Wordcount: 403 words

Excerpt: He took some time in his true form, carefully, to wrap presents, and he sat around the fire and on occasion, if Nakuru was being particularly difficult, in the Christmas tree, peering out from the pine-scented darkness of a firm branch.

Spinelsun was not excitable (except under the influence of sugar, which was excusable as a medical condition). He was a planner. He took his time.

The contrast between him and his sister was never more obvious than during the Christmas season. Nakuru approached shopping as something slightly more special than a hobby and slightly less special than, say, running for political office. She started shopping on the first day of December and didn't stop until December 24th, providing gifts from her kind heart for everyone she knew, from the mailman (gift certificate for a foot massage, he needed it after delivering all the packages she ordered) to her sibling and her creator.

Spinelsun didn't know many people, and he didn't care to. He rarely left the house, and utterly refused to go shopping with Nakuru. Considering that she had came home last year with a grin and a black eye, gained in a particularly exciting early morning trip (along with a very nice sweater, which she'd worn in their Christmas card picture), his refusal was understandable.

It wasn't difficult to work a telephone, and generally customer service representatives didn't take time to confirm that their customer was, in fact, human. The Internet was another viable option. On occasion, he could be coaxed out of the house to quest for a gift with Eriol-- he generally helped his creator pick out Kaho's present-- but during most of the Christmas season, Spinel's routine did not change. He read, he considered, he dodged his sister. He enjoyed it when Eriol and Kaho were home more often. He took some time in his true form, carefully, to wrap presents, and he sat around the fire and on occasion, if Nakuru was being particularly difficult, in the Christmas tree, peering out from the pine-scented darkness of a firm branch.

He was not excitable, for the most part, but he made sure that the persons who gave him gifts understood his gratitude. He endured Nakuru's bone-crushing hugs and relished Eriol and Kaho's kinder ones. He wrote thank-you notes and left them in appropriate places, exactly a week after Christmas was over. Nakuru always told him to cheer up when they opened presents, wrapping a bow around his neck, but he just blinked.

He kept Christmas in his heart, if not on his face, but he knew what was more important.
