Excerpt: She was shocked when she woke up on Christmas Day, then, to see Tomoyo still tucked into the bed next to her. Tomoyo was an early riser-- she never slept in.
Meiling knew that her girlfriend was a very busy woman. Tomoyo was running-- very competently, as a matter of fact-- a toy business, as her mother had retired, and also managing a budding fashion-design career. Meiling admired someone who had known all her life what she was going to do with it, and so she didn't begrudge it when Tomoyo had to cancel dates or go out of town. She knew that Tomoyo was only doing the things she had to do.
She missed Tomoyo when the woman was gone from their bed. She wasn't a housewife herself, in any sense of the word, so she got on with her own work, but there was some part of her that was always with Tomoyo, waiting for her to walk back into the room and take her hand.
They made Christmas plans early, but Meiling wasn't counting on a lack of interruption. Businesses, especially toy businesses, were open on Christmas Day. Christmas was for lovers-- but lovers went shopping.
She was shocked when she woke up on Christmas Day, then, to see Tomoyo still tucked into the bed next to her. Tomoyo was an early riser-- she never slept in. Meiling blinked and as soon as she did, Tomoyo opened her eyes and smiled, with no trace of sleep in them.
"Were you waiting for me to wake up?" Meiling asked wonderingly, and Tomoyo nodded. Near the beginning of their relationship, the thought would have made Meiling feel awkward, but she had learned as time went on that Tomoyo was as devoted to her personal relationships as she was to her work. It was one of the reasons that she never worried when Tomoyo was working late (well, she never worried about Tomoyo cheating, that is; sometimes she worried about Tomoyo's lack of sleep).
"Good morning," Tomoyo said, leaning forward and planting a kiss on Meiling's forehead. On the bedside table, her phone buzzed. Meiling kept the disappointment off of her face as Tomoyo rolled over and picked up the phone. She rolled onto her back and held the phone straight up in the air. The picture always made Meiling want to giggle a little. Tomoyo was slightly far-sighted, and this was the only way she could see the phone number.
Tomoyo glanced over at Meiling, who was still poker-faced, and then she carefully hit the Disconnect button and turned the phone off. She looked at Meiling again, and grinned to see her gaping.
"Christmas is for lovers," she said, setting her phone back on the bedside table and turning back to wrap her arms around Meiling.
"Merry Christmas," Meiling said, leaning forward to kiss Tomoyo, and the phone didn't ring again until December 26th.
