Tomoyo isn't sure when going home for Obon became more of a chore than a pleasure. Even though she works hard, she has always appreciated the short break from the bright lights of Hong Kong and a phone that never quite stops ringing. But this year, the rental car is too quiet and she finds herself longing for something else when she pulls into her mother's driveway.

Her mother is the only person she knows who is more focused on her work than Tomoyo is, but it is only two hours after Tomoyo's arrival that Sonomi appears, wrapping her daughter in a warm hug and inquiring about the trip. They talk once a week, or once every two weeks, when they remember. It's not that Tomoyo doesn't love her mother, but they are both very busy, and Hong Kong is very far from Tomoeda.

Sonomi asks after Sakura, of course, and for a moment Tomoyo wonders if Sakura's absence is what is making this trip more of an irritation than a pleasure. It is always nice to have Sakura in the seat next to her on the flight, the two of them giggling as if they are still schoolgirls, with Syaoran in the aisle seat, indulgent. Sakura has stayed home this year, due to her advanced pregnancy, and Tomoyo shows her mother the photographs she has, pointing out the adorable roundness of Sakura's stomach. Sonomi is thrilled. It doesn't appear that her daughter will be giving her grandchildren any time soon-- and she would never pressure Tomoyo to do that-- and she will love Sakura's little one just the same as she would if the child were Tomoyo's.

Tomoyo has a treasure trove of photographs and as Sonomi pages through them, offering questions and commentary, she pauses on a picture of an amber-eyed girl with her arm around Tomoyo's neck. Her eyes ask the question.

"That's Meiling-chan, Mother," Tomoyo tells her. "Li-kun's cousin? I think you met her..."

"A lovely girl," Sonomi says, eyes oddly soft, and Tomoyo smiles, and blushes a little. She remembers the day that photograph was taken, and the odd way her heart was thumping when Meiling threw her arm around Tomoyo. If she shut her eyes she could even smell the gentle musk of Tomoyo's perfume.

"She is lovely," Tomoyo whispers, and something falls into place, something clicks. She stares at the photograph and thinks about going back to Hong Kong, where Meiling is waiting to hear the stories of her visit. She'll be wearing that black jacket that Tomoyo helped her buy at a little thrift store tucked away in a little-visited part of the city. She'll have bought the food for their weekly get-together and she won't hesitate to put her feet up on Tomoyo's coffee table, lean back into her couch, and smile at her.

Tomoyo has always gone home for Obon, but she thinks now that home is with Meiling in that small third-floor-walk-up, where Meiling models her dresses, tells her stories about work, and listens to her talk about Sakura without protest. How she has missed this, all this time... Well, sometimes the heart is just a little bit blind.

She has a great visit with Sonomi and catching up with the rest of their classmates; delivering messages to Fujitaka and Touya and Yukito, but when she touches down in Hong Kong, she is relieved to be back. She walks into her apartment and sets her baggage on the floor, her cell phone already in her hand, dialing Meiling's number.

She greets the Chinese girl at the door with a soft kiss, taking the warm box of food from her hands, but she drops it on the floor when Meiling wraps her arms around her and kisses her back.

Tomoyo is home.
