If You Please (Watanuki gen)
Title: If You Please
Day/Theme: Oct 2 // shiny happy people
Series: xxxHOLiC
Pairing: Watanuki gen; Doumeki/Himawari
Rating: G
Excerpt: For a moment he moved like he used to in high school, all irritation and elbows, and then he sighed and became still. That never solved anything.
Watanuki had been in charge of the shop for two years when he got the invitation. He rarely got mail, given that his home and his job weren't visible to most mailmen, but he got letters when he needed to. Yuuko had made sure to provide for that.
In fact, he thought, looking grimly down at the small envelope, she provided for everything. She was planning this for a long time.
The fact never failed to arouse a combination of rage and hopelessness in him. For a moment he moved like he used to in high school, all irritation and elbows, and then he sighed and became still. That never solved anything.
He opened the invitation and traced his fingers across the letters like he was trying to read Braille. It was Doumeki (he'd never quite gotten the hang of first names with the archer) and Himawari's wedding invitation.
Happy shiny people, he thought sourly, sinking back again into old habits. He shook his head. No, that was being cruel. They'd made their decisions, and he'd made his, and there'd be no point in blaming hitsuzen, because what was... was.
He wondered for a moment if Himawari ever got Doumeki to smile, and then he frowned and went back to cleaning out the back room (two years in and he wasn't even halfway through, and if this was how his wish was granted, he sort of wanted to make a different one).
After a few hours he emerged, wiping the sweat from his forehead, replacing it with dust, and he filled out the RSVP form (scratching out the "+1" with excessive vigor), putting it in the envelope. He could send it when he went out for groceries, he supposed.
He wondered for a moment if Doumeki made Himawari smile, but the thought stung a little. He was glad to hear the bell ring and he put the envelope down to answer the door.
"We have a customer," he mumbled under his breath, and he never did get around to mailing the letter.
