What Comes Next (Ginny/Luna)
Comm:
lgbtfest
Length: 775
Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: What Comes Next
Author: rhap_chan
Theme(s):
lgbtfest: 409. Harry Potter: Luna Lovegood/Ginny Weasley. Ginny doesn't understand that Luna fancies her-- she thinks it's just Luna being weird (as usual). Luna wished there was an easier way to convince Ginny and everyone else that she is serious.
IMPORTANT! I did not claim this with the fest, because the fic I wrote is way too short. I wrote this on my own time. NOT
lgbtfest affiliated!
Pairing/Characters: Luna/Ginny; Colin, Neville, and Dean
Rating: G

Excerpt: "Normally I would ask Harry, because he gives wonderful advice," Luna said, tucking the braid behind her ear, "but it didn't seem like a prudent thing to do, given that you used to date him."
"Would you like me to kiss you-- would that be convincing?"
Luna's gaze was earnest as always-- but Ginny scowled and turned to the index of her Potions book to look up antidotes. A study group had seemed like a smart, innocuous idea when Luna had first proposed it. Ginny liked getting good marks, and it was one of the sanest things Luna had ever proposed, which gave one the desire to pounce on it and hold it up to the light, checking for flaws.
There hadn't been any, Ginny had thought-- until Luna had held back after the rest had gone last week to tell her she was in love. With Ginny, specifically, muttering something about compatible auras and fairies that Ginny hadn't quite understood.
"I don't think you understand what you're saying," she replied in a rush, not knowing what else to say to Luna's gaze. Her eyes were so... piercing. They demanded truth-- even confusing truths like this one.
Neville, Dean, and Colin were staring at them. Ginny glared and they bent back over their homework.
"I don't think so," Ginny said, rustling pages in the hope Luna would get the hint.
"Bother," Luna said, undiscouraged. "That's how it works in Muggle movies, Hermione said." She reached up and grabbed a lock of her silver-blonde hair that hung in her eyes, and began to braid it, cross-eyed. Ginny was torn between exasperation and amusement. There was something to be said for Luna-- that she was always willing to amuse, even if that wasn't her initial intention. And of course, she was incapable of being boring. It was a good quality for a friend.
"You talked to Hermione about this?" Ginny said, taken aback. It wasn't an obvious first choice-- nor second, third, or well... Hermione didn't seem like a good person to ask for dating advice, if her choice of Ron was any indication.
"Normally I would ask Harry, because he gives wonderful advice," Luna said, tucking the braid behind her ear, "but it didn't seem like a prudent thing to do, given that you used to date him."
"Makes sense," Ginny said weakly, a lukewarm sense of just-avoided disaster washing over her.
"Yes," Luna said, staring. It was odd to think that Loony Luna could be mentally undressing her. Shouldn't think about it. Ginny shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
Colin coughed. "I reckon you're a lesbian, Luna," he said. The other boys gave up any pretense of homework when he spoke.
"A lesbian?"
"Means you like women," he said, gesturing in a vaguely meaningful way.
"So do you," Luna pointed out.
"Means you're a woman who prefers other women," Colin said swiftly, though Dean sniggered. What Ginny had ever saw in him, she thought, she had no idea what it was now.
"Oh. Okay?" Luna said. "Is that a Muggle thing?"
"No," Ginny burst out without thinking, "wizards too... just not as many."
Luna nodded and continued watching Ginny. "What about you?" she asked--not with hope, but with honest curiousity, one of those reactions that made Luna special. Not just to Ginny.
"Luna, I said--" she began, but she was interrupted when Luna leaned over and kissed her. Her mouth was warm and she smelled like old parchment and pumpkins. An electric thrill ran up Ginny's spine and warmth gathered in her stomach. It was better than kissing Dean-- a million times better. Ginny gasped.
"Oh, did I do it wrong?" Luna asked. Ginny blinked. Luna had broken the kiss but her nose was still half an inch from Ginny's own. Those clear eyes bored into the Weasley girl.
"No," Ginny croaked, and to prove Luna's point she leaned forward and shut her eyes. The thrill was just the same. Ginny's cheeks were on fire. The boys whooped in interest.
"This-- is-- a-- library!" Madam Pince said, appearing around the stacks. "And I thought this was a study group," she continued in an accusatory tone.
"We're studying!" Neville said immediately, holding up his Transfiguration book, and the others scrambled to reassure the librarian as well. Suspiciously, Madam Pince moved away.
Ginny looked at Luna, who seemed blank.
"I'm not quite sure what comes next," she confided, "but perhaps you could be my girlfriend?"
Ginny grinned shyly and then nodded. Then, somehow, they managed to return to their books. After a moment, Ginny reached under the table to take Luna's hand.
"Golly," Dean muttered under his breath. Without looking up, the other boys nodded. Ginny opened her mouth to chastise, but changed her mind. There was something to being a lesbian, she thought, that promoted patience.
Luna smiled and Ginny smiled back.
