Excerpt: She had always been cynical, and even faced with a divine presence, she tried to remain cool. She watched the flames burn harmlessly on his slate-colored face. It was nearly comical, that sharp nose and exaggerated features.

1.

She was never the prettiest girl in the village-- even when her body bloomed first and she learned how to walk in such a way that every boy had to stop and stare. There was something ugly in her, and she was whispered about behind closed doors. Headstrong, they pronounced, like a deadly disease. Too good for us. Thinks too often.

One night on her way back from the well, getting water for tomorrow's cooking duties, four girls jumped her to teach her a lesson. None of them were good fighters, and they left when her kicks met her targets.

She wore the black eye like a badge for the next week, and that's when he noticed her the first time.

2.

She really loved him, she really, really did. Her stomach jumped and her heart raced and her lips were dry. She wrote terrible poetry and pretended not to care when he spoke to her, even though she could hardly stand still.

She'll be with child before the year is out, the girls whispered, but Meg didn't care what they said. He loved her with the black eye. He loved her defiance. He loved her.

She went with Hades without a fight, when he left her.

3.

She had been the one to summon the god, when she'd heard about the accident. The village healer predicted he wouldn't live through the night. When she heard that, she kissed his forehead-- he was so hot that she walked even faster when she strode out into the forest.

The moon was dark, but she knew where the pomegranate tree was. She picked one, took a large bite, and spit the seeds onto the ground.

"Hades," she called into the darkness. "Hades!"

She was only a little surprised that he showed up in person.

4.

She had always been cynical, and even faced with a divine presence, she tried to remain cool. She watched the flames burn harmlessly on his slate-colored face. It was nearly comical, that sharp nose and exaggerated features.

"Do you understand what you're signing here, doll? Legally, I have to ask." He waved a hand expressively. "Some law of my idiot brother's. After that bit with my wife... well, that's a story for another day."

He leaned down so that his forehead was nearly even with hers, and she didn't flinch, even though she wanted to.

"I don't do laundry or windows," she said coolly, and Zeus help her but he actually laughed, leaning back and putting his hands on his hips, a full belly laugh. He leaned forward again and ran a very sharp fingernail along her jawline.

"I like you," he said. "Now sign."

She did.

5.

She worried that being around Hades would corrupt her-- that there would be a point at which she would just do whatever he asked, no protest, and she wouldn't even realize it was wrong, that it would hurt someone.

"Talk to the River Guardian, give him what he wants, whatever it is..." he lifted his eyebrows expressively, "and make sure he agrees officially. Shouldn't be hard. He's as thick as Pain and Panic are."

She nodded, rolling her eyes, but she sighed and walked into the forest. Meg didn't expect it to be difficult. Promise the River Guardian a bigger river, sea, bodies of water, etc., and he'd fall right into their hands. Chalk up another one for their side of the apocalypse.

But it wasn't working-- none of her usual tricks-- and despite what she'd told Hades so easily, she couldn't make herself give that sort of thing to this creature. She still had her morals.

That was something to rejoice about, as long as he didn't rape her, she supposed, but she wasn't holding out much hope when Wonder Boy appeared. She didn't have a lot of hope for him, either, to be honest-- he was gawky, obviously new to the whole hero bit-- but he managed to make it work for him.

She'd never tell him she didn't believe in him, then, but she hadn't.

(The important part, she supposed, was that she believed now.)

Yay, someone who won't think I'm weird if I tell them that Hercules is my favorite Disney movie (not that I don't love the other Disney movies with all my heart.) #4 was my favorite btw. I could so see her saying, "I don't laundry or windows."
