Excerpt: Tomoyo nodded and then shrugged. She looked down at their intertwined fingers and said, "That's the day I realized you were so beautiful. And possibly the kindest girl in the world."
They were sitting on Tomoyo's couch one afternoon when Tomoyo looked up and told Meiling that it was their first anniversary. Her grin was genuine and Meiling smiled back without thinking, but then her brow furrowed.
"Hasn't it only been six months?" she asked. Odd that Tomoyo would forget a date, she thought. Tomoyo smiled more broadly. She leaned over and linked her fingers with Meiling's.
"Don't you remember?" she said softly. "Our first double date with dear Sakura-chan and Li-kun was a year ago today."
"But a year ago we'd just come back--" Meiling began to say, and then she laughed.
"You mean that "date" that nearly turned into the apocalypse? I still owe Hiiragizawa a kick in the pants for that one. Imagine, a Nothing card..."
Tomoyo nodded and then shrugged. She looked down at their intertwined fingers and said, "That's the day I realized you were so beautiful. And possibly the kindest girl in the world."
Meiling laughed in self-deprecation. "I'm not the kindest. I mean, think about how we met. How kind was I then?"
"That doesn't matter. What matters is that you gave him to her-- without bitterness, without regrets. That's love. That's kindness."
"It wasn't easy," Meiling said softly.
"Of course it wasn't." Tomoyo leaned into Meiling's shoulder. "But you did it anyway."
"I think I got something pretty nice in return," Meiling said, poking Tomoyo playfully. It turned into a tickle fight which ended breathlessly a few minutes later, with Meiling on top of Tomoyo, their noses inches apart. Meiling leaned down and kissed her girlfriend thoroughly.
"I didn't give up anything at all," she said. "I just found something new." And she kissed her again.
