Excerpt: "Hi, Sharpay," he said awkwardly, clutching at the lace trim in his hands and wishing fiercely it would disappear. Her eyes traveled to the lace and back to his face.
"And I thought she had me whipped," Sharpay said from behind him. He hadn't heard her voice in years, but still he recognized it. Troy whirled around and met her confident brown eyes.
"Hi, Sharpay," he said awkwardly, clutching at the lace trim in his hands and wishing fiercely it would disappear. Her eyes traveled to the lace and back to his face.
"So that's why you guys broke up," she said, raising an eyebrow. Troy frowned.
"No, it's not," he hissed, trying to sound manly. "There were a lot of reasons that Gabriella and I broke up and I don't want to get into them now because--"
"You're here!" a woman called, excited, and she flew into the room and wrapped her arms around Sharpay's neck.
"I was afraid you wouldn't make it!" she squealed. "It's amazing to see you!"
Sharpay met Troy's eyes above Gabriella's shoulder and her expression was both confused and resigned. He tried not to laugh. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, he mouthed.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Sharpay said without enthusiasm when Gabriella pulled back from the hug, resting her hands on her old friend's shoulders. She wore a sudden look of concern.
"I was just worried... I know you and your brother aren't in touch as much anymore, not since..."
She trailed off and there was an immensely uncomfortable silence. No one wanted to say since he got famous and you didn't or since I broke up with Troy and started dating him, though everybody thought at the time he was gay. Troy coughed and held the lace out.
"That will be perfect for the tablecloths!" Gabriella squealed, reaching out and taking the fabric from Troy. "You are the best man of honor ever!" She gave him a quick air-kiss on each cheek before fluttering off into the next room.
"Where did all the perky come from?" Sharpay said, relaxing. She pulled her coat off and Troy took it from her and hung it on a hook. He shrugged.
"She's really excited about marrying your brother. Absolutely off the wall. She must have shown me her ring a thousand times. I almost turned gay in defense."
"So you're still her best friend, even though you're not dating?" she asked curiously.
Troy put his hand against his neck awkwardly. "Yeah. She's a special girl, you know."
"Oh, I know. You gave up the chance to date me for her," Sharpay said, waving her hand. It was beringed and dazzling as always, but Troy could see little differences about her. It had been a hard eight years. Most of her jewelry was glass, and her designer clothes were well-worn. It was sort of strange. He hadn't expected to ever see her again, really. At their ten-year reunion maybe, but he thought she would have been doing soap operas or pop music by then, her brother at her side. Instead, Ryan had gotten the surprise hit and his sister had faded into the background. The last Troy had heard, she was waitressing and doing the occasional ad for model agencies. He hadn't had the heart to gloat about it. Whatever her personality flaws, Sharpay had been good at what she did.
"Well, we all see how that worked out," he said, uncomfortable. "And I couldn't say no, even though her fiance has much better fashion sense than I do and would be way more suited to wedding planning."
"I feel like the last year of my life has been one long wedding," Sharpay said, running her hand through her hair. "Three of my girlfriends have gotten married. And in the ugliest dresses too. I feel like that phrase-- 'always a bridesmaid,' or whatever."
She made a funny face and Troy laughed. Her words felt genuine, and so was her smile. He was honestly intrigued by her display of maturity.
"You know, I'm going to be in town for a while," she said, looking at a point above his left shoulder and twirling her finger in her hair. "I could maybe help you out. Since you're a guy, and way clueless. We can talk about it over dinner if you seated us near each other."
"There's supposed to be seating at an engagement dinner?" he said, panicked. He smacked himself in the forehead.
"No big," Sharpay said, reaching into her oversized handbag and pulling out a stack of index cards. "For phone numbers," she explained, noticing his surprise. "I had business cards but these are cheaper. Just write the names on the plain side and no one will notice."
Troy grinned. "You're a lifesaver," he said.
"Oh, I know," she said, a satisfied look on her face. "Now hand me a pen and I'll do half of them." She handed him a stack of cards.
"Thanks," he said after a moment's careful scribbling.
"I said no big," she replied, but without venom in her voice, and when they went into the other room she brushed her hand against his for a moment.
