The first time that Andy found Woody and Bo next to each other, he thought he'd done it himself, on accident. The second time, he wasn't so sure. By the third time, he decided it was his sister, and he ran off to talk to her in no uncertain terms, shouting down the hall about "touching my stuff!"
Woody stood up and brushed himself off. Andy didn't often simply toss him down, but he was upset. He had a sort of sheepish grin on his face. Buzz took a long look at the door and came to stand beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" he asked. Woody jumped as though he hadn't seen him there.
"What do you mean?" he asked innocently.
"You know what I mean," Buzz said. "You told me the rules. And now you're breaking them. What's the deal, Woody?"
"Buzz, I--" Woody began, but then they heard sulking footsteps approach. Andy was annoyed because his sister insisted she hadn't moved his toys. Buzz dove across the floor to his proper place and Woody went boneless after inching just a little closer to his wife.

It was two days later before they could have a proper conversation. Andy was at school and Woody was looking out the window onto the quiet lawn when Buzz climbed up and sat down beside him.
"What's up?" Woody asked, sounding depressed. He rested his head on his hands. Buzz had been about to scold his friend, to ask the question he was asking the other day, but he swallowed his irritation.
"Not much," he said carefully, looking out with Woody. After a long moment, Woody sighed.
"Having trouble with the missus?" Buzz asked, trying to be light. Woody frowned.
"No, not at all. Thanks again for doing the ceremony, Buzz."
"Hey, a space captain is ordained to do weddings, I think," he said, shrugging. "It was my pleasure."
"It's been great," Woody said, "it really has. Bo-- she's just amazing, you know. She's a lucky gal. Except..." He trailed off.
"What?" Buzz asked. "Did it really irritate you to take her last name?"
"Heck, I don't even have one," Woody pointed out. "No big deal. It's just..." He sighed. "It's stupid, Buzz, never mind."
Buzz reached out and rested his hand on his best friend's shoulder. "What is it?" he asked gently. Woody didn't move. After a moment he spoke.
"We both sort of wanted kids."
Buzz's eyes widened in shock. He cast about in his memory for an appropriate response. "Can toys even--?"
"Well, the Barbies say that GIRL has some baby dolls. I just thought, well, if Andy found us together a lot, he'd realize..." He removed his hat and set it on his knees, scowling down at it. "It was stupid. Andy is just a kid. He wouldn't know. And you-- you have a kid now, and you didn't even have to ask!"
He met his best friend's eyes, lips trembling, and then he looked away and rubbed at his eyes. "It's stupid," he muttered into his sleeve.
Buzz had almost forgotten about Baxter-- the newest addition to the Buzz Lightyear television show was his "son and sidekick," Baxter Lightyear. He was a guaranteed birthday gift this year. He just hoped he wouldn't have to cuff some sense into the boy. Where was his mother when he needed one, anyway?
He hadn't even thought about Woody and Bo. Woody's show wasn't on television anymore, the possibility of expansion nonexistent. The only thing they could do was adopt. And they hadn't had any luck.
"You know, raising a kid on my own is going to be pretty hard," Buzz said casually. "I could probably use some help from, you know, people. Just anybody."
"Do you think?" Woody said, looking up hopefully.
"I don't have a wife," Buzz replied. "I'm not equipped to raise a son. Especially not a son of mine. He'll be a tiger."
"You'd just have to keep him busy, teach him how to grow up right." Woody's eyes shone. "Teach him to play baseball, how to be the best toy he can be."
Buzz laughed at his friend's enthusiasm. "I can see you've thought this through. One thing, though..."
"Hmm?"
"I think we'd better keep my last name."
"Why?" Woody asked, confused.
"Baxter Peep? That kid would be teased by the army men until the day he died!" Buzz said, grinning.
"Are you saying it's not manly?" Woody asked, eyes shining with good humor. He pushed Buzz's shoulder. "This old cowboy should trade his guns for knitting?"
"I'm not saying it exactly," Buzz said innocently, and the two of them roughoused for a bit.
And when Baxter came, the three of them learned more about children than they ever thought they would.
