Excerpt: Pensively, she reached up and grabbed at something hanging around her neck; she pulled the necklace out of her blouse and stared at it for a long moment. Something pink, with a green staring eye of its own. Its aura burned in the same manner that she did.
Doumeki followed her down the street, his eyes carefully fixed on a point directly above her head. Her hair bobbed in her wake; she was moving fast. He didn't know why, but that's why he was following her-- to find out.
She neared the street where Yuuko's shop was located, when it needed to be there for him, and she paused at the corner. He nearly ran into her; he'd started jogging at the end of the last block, her urgency begging his own. He expected her to notice his sudden stop and inquire, but she seemed preoccupied with something else, so he strode over near the bus stop and studied her from the corner of his eye.
Her eyes were green, her hair long and tawny. She wore the same school uniform Himawari did, and looked about their age, but he knew he'd never seen her before. What's more, she seemed a bit lost, and someone who had been attending classes all year would have no trouble finding the school from here.
The thing that Doumeki had noticed about her first-- the thing that prompted him to chase after her-- was the raw power that came out from her in waves. She seemed delicate-- petite, with pale skin-- but she knew the supernatural. From the feel of things, she bathed in it. Not ghosts, exactly-- but it was the sort of feel Doumeki got from Yuuko, and someone with that sort of ability should be carefully watched, he thought.
Pensively, she reached up and grabbed at something hanging around her neck; she pulled the necklace out of her blouse and stared at it for a long moment. Something pink, with a green staring eye of its own. Its aura burned in the same manner that she did. She looked around and spotted him. He turned slightly and pretended to be waiting for the bus. She opened her mouth, shut it, and then said hesitantly, "Excuse me?"
"Mmm," Doumeki said in a noncommitting tone. He was glad for a moment that Watanuki hadn't come to school this way today. He had a weakness for pretty girls-- sure they would do him no harm. Doumeki had saved him from enough pretty girls to know the exact oppposite.
"I think I'm lost," the girl said. "Could you tell me where the school is?"
He nodded, still assessing her. Hurriedly she tucked her necklace back into her shirt. She looked up at him. After a long moment, he nodded again and started off down the street towards the school, lost in thought. She followed. He wasn't particularly happy to have someone with that sort of power following behind him, but it gave him a little more time to assess the situation.
"I'm Kinomoto Sakura," she said, taking a few swift steps to catch up to him.
"Doumeki," he said in his usual tight-lipped manner. This didn't seem to discourage her, though it usually discouraged any of the girls who found the courage to talk to him; she smiled instead, as though remembering something.
"I'm new here," she went on. "I wanted to finish up the year at Seijyuu, but my father got a job offer here."
"Mmm," Doumeki said. She smiled still. He was still watching for the lid to blow, the other shoe to fall. Surely a witch with her power wasn't trying to be-- normal?
Just as he thought that, a foot shot out of a gate he swore hadn't been there before and Sakura tripped and fell. He pivoted and saw Yuuko attached to the foot. She winked at him and then looked down at Sakura, whom she had caught in such a blur he'd hardly seen her move.
"Oh, dear girl, are you okay?" she asked, gently pulling Sakura to her feet.
"Oh, I'm fine," she said. "I'm so sorry I wasn't watching where I was going!"
"Oh, nonsense," Yuuko said, still syrupy. "It was my fault. I feel terrible about it. Is there anything I could do for you?"
"Oh, no--" Sakura began, but Yuuko cut her off.
"I know! Why don't you come to tea after school lets out? It's a short day today, right? I don't get many visitors and I'd love to share tea with you. You can meet my employee-- he goes to your school as well."
She seemed hesitant, but Yuuko was so cheerful that she had to smile back.
"Of course, if you insist," she said. Doumeki looked over her head at Yuuko, and lifted his eyebrow. Yuuko just grinned.
"Great to meet you!" she said cheerfully, waving, and Sakura glanced down at her watch and gasped.
"We're going to be late, Doumeki-sempai!" she said, and Doumeki nodded. He wasn't often late, but had known better than to interrupt whatever was going on here. Maybe Watanuki would know.
Then again, probably not.
He continued back down the street and Sakura came after him, calling back to Yuuko, "I'll see you later!" and then trying to catch up.
"She seems like a nice lady," she said.
"Mmm," Doumeki said.
The bell rang up ahead, but Doumeki walked her to the office before he went to class. He met Watanuki's curious whispers with his usual impenetrable stare, thinking.
And what he was thinking was, This is, I'm sure, only the beginning.
