People were starting to talk about Tomoyo.
Of course, people always talked about Tomoyo, because she was beautiful, a great singer, and a devoted friend. But people were starting to wonder why Tomoyo turned down every boy that came courting her. They were beginning to talk.
Eriol called her one night, something he'd never done, and he said, "People are starting to say that you're in love with Sakura-san."
Tomoyo picked up information on her own and told him, "People are starting to wonder why Mizuki-sensei lives with you."
They spent a moment in silence and then both came separately to the same conclusion. It would have to be done.
*
The next Monday when Sakura came to school, Tomoyo wasn't there. She was never tardy, so Sakura was worried, and thought about calling her best friend, but Tomoyo came in five minutes before the bell.
Holding Eriol's hand.
They were looking at each other in the textbook lovey-dovey way, and Sakura couldn't help but let a "CUTE!!!" escape her lips very loudly. People turned to see what the commotion was, and then talked loudly amongst themself about this new development.
Eriol's and Tomoyo's eyes met. It was going as planned.
"When did this happen?" Sakura asked. Tomoyo nodded minutely for Eriol to field this one. He was a better liar than her; she was simply better at covering things up.
"Well, I've just always thought that Tomoyo-san was pretty, so I asked her to dinner this weekend," Eriol said smoothly, putting his hand on her shoulder. She smiled at him lovingly by pretending he was Sakura.
"And we had a great time, and finally I said, "Can I keep you?" and she said yes," Eriol finished with amusement. Tomoyo shot him a dark look. That was demeaning.
"Cute!" Sakura declared again, and under her breath Tomoyo repeated, "'Can I keep you?'"
"It's a cute story," he said, and to his credit was able to keep a straight face when she quietly drove her heel into the back of his ankle.
The teacher came in and gallantly Eriol led Tomoyo to her seat and held it out for her. She appreciated his gentlemanly gesture like a good girlfriend would. Sakura sat down, sighing happily for her friend, and Syaoran glared at Eriol. Was this another of the reincarnate's schemes to make him out to be a bad boyfriend, just for fun? In any case, he'd better never hurt Tomoyo.
Class started and relationships were pushed to the back of everyone's minds.

As planned, exactly one week later the "couple" had a terrible argument in the middle of lunch over the portrayal of samurai in literature during the Edo period, and broke up explosively. As planned, Tomoyo cried in Sakura's arms, and an unplanned side note was the fact that Syaoran quietly kicked Eriol in a few places that wouldn't bruise for hurting Tomoyo.
A week after that, everything was back to normal, including Eriol and Tomoyo's friendship.
Sometimes when Li-kun wasn't paying attention, Eriol would lean forward and whisper, "Can I keep you?" in Tomoyo's ear and later she would kick him. But they always do say that we hurt the people we love the most, don't we?
