He wasn't sure what it was that made him choose the quiet Asian girl for an interview after Alfred passed away. Her English was impeccable on the phone and she had surpassed the atheltic qualifications, which was for a bookish girl-- both suspicious things to Bruce. They were the traits of a heroine-- or a supervillainess, much more likely-- and he had no desire to bring a traitor into his secret and his home.
Still she was the best applicant to answer his ad. He'd only placed it in certain newspapers, the right ones, for the people who would understand his need for a discreet, smart person who could take care of him- or herself. She was the only woman and one of three Asians who entered an application with him. Her qualifications and her references were spotless. She had graduated at the top of her class in a famous Japanese high school, and done the same for college. She'd worked for a time as a doctor, and that was what made him decide to interview her. Someone with medical qualifications would be quite useful.
"So why do you want to work for me?" he asked, feeling somehow naked without his mask on. That was ridiculous. He was Bruce Wayne during the day. It was a real life. He enjoyed it. Still, her eyes were piercing...
"Mr. Wayne," she said, "I used to work with a wonderful team. And, well... we grew up and things changed and I'm not with my team anymore. But I can't stop seeing all of the injustice in the world."
"I'm not sure that a position as a butler will fulfill your... aspirations," he said, knowing somehow that she knew and how did she--
"I don't want to wear the Batgirl costume, though," she said after a thoughtful moment; "I have my own..."
After she explained he hired her, but he always felt a little silly appearing next to a young doctor who still wore her school uniform and fought crime in it.

It's interesting that you never once mentioned Ami's name in this fic. I mean, I guess one can figure it out, but I checked the tags to be sure.
Also, interesting combination of fandoms!

And the name... oh I'm terrible about just using pronouns, absolutely horrible. And actually the reason I did it for this story is because in its original location on my LJ, it's clearly marked as Ami and Batman. -.-

Aww. I thought maybe it was something stylistic.

Interesting choice for a crossover, I'd certainly have never thought of it. Really enjoyed this, though. ^^
