Meiling always gets what she wants, the family says, in a mixture of irritation and admiration. She is a determined little soul.

They're wrong, of course, or I wouldn't be heartbroken right now. Perhaps the family should say that I always try to get what I want, am determined to reach for the high points.

Do I ever really get them?

I didn't have magic, no matter how determined I was to unlock it. And in the end, I didn't have Syaoran. It had been a calculated move for a little girl, but in the end it failed.

"Syaoran, promise me! I want you to promise that until you find someone you love better than me, then we'll be engaged! You'll marry me, Syaoran!"

"Do as you like," he said.

That was a wicked thing to say, Syaoran, because I know you never felt the way that I did. He was my knight in shining armor, but he didn't want the princess.

He wanted that girl struggling so hard to be a knight too, and I can't even hate her for taking him away from me. It is like Daidouji told me--his happiness is my happiness. She seemed to understand, though I don't know why or when she was touched by heartbreak.

It is a calculated move, and why not? Meiling always gets what she wants, the family says.
