Excerpt: "Momma, Daddy says that when he was little, he told the truth all the time and no one believed him," the little boy said, eyes wide

Spending time with one Yamazaki had taught Chiharu to keep an eye out, to glance over her shoulder once in a while. This was why her son's tackle-hug didn't even faze her, and she carefully pried little arms from around her neck.

"Momma, Daddy says that when he was little, he told the truth all the time and no one believed him," the little boy said, eyes wide, when she set him on her lap. She knew from past experience that she wouldn't be able to finish whatever she was working on until she had indulged his questions. And since he was spending his afternoon with his father, who was supposed to be helping him with his homework instead of telling him stories, Chiharu knew there would be plenty of questions.

"You remember when Daddy told you Santa Claus was real, and then he was stuck in the flue until the firefighters came?" Chiharu said, stroking the boy's childish curls.

"Uh huh," the child said.

"This is like that."

"Are they going to bring the big truck this time?"

Chiharu laughed. "No, I mean that your dad isn't telling the truth. He's lying again."

"How come you can always tell?" the boy asked her. In their firstborn, Yamazaki had found the perfect way to practice his favorite hobby. The boy believed everything his father told him. Apparently her skepticism wasn't a genetically dominant trait.

"I've had a lot of practice," Chiharu said, ruffling the boy's hair and then taking him off her lap. "Why don't you go practice too? Go ask your father about badminton. Or chocolate. Or China. Or... anything, really. But finish your homework first, okay?"

"Okay," the boy said, and nodded. For a few minutes, Chiharu was left in peace. But spending time with two Yamazaki's had taught her to keep an eye out over her shoulder, and when her husband came back to complain about her bursting his bubble, she was prepared with a kiss and only a small scolding.
