Excerpt: "Fujitaka, if I should die soon..." Nadeshiko said softly in the same monotone.

It was late when she finally slid into bed with him. Sakura had gotten colic recently and was fussy into the late hours of the night. The baby's illness hadn't changed her sunny disposition, but it had dampened it a little. She was so tired lately.

She wrapped her arms around him and snuggled into his shoulder. He took this as a sign to set his book aside and turn the lights off. He couldn't fall asleep until she was there with him, so he hadn't been sleeping much either, but now they could rest.

"Fujitaka..." Nadeshiko said sleepily.

"Mmm," Fujitaka said, on the edge of sleep.

"Fujitaka, if I should die soon..." Nadeshiko said softly in the same monotone. She was tired, but she wasn't going to let that get in the way of saying what needed to be said.

Fujitaka blinked twice and all his fatigue faded away. "W-what?" he stuttered.

"Don't worry, darling," she said sweetly, rubbing her head into his neck like a cat. "I was just thinking... if I should die soon..."

"I don't want to think about it," Fujitaka interrupted. He stroked his wife's hair and ran his fingers all the way down through her curls, finally resting a hand on her butt. He liked her butt. He was her husband and that was okay.

No matter what Daidouji Sonomi said.

If anything, Sonomi would be the death of Nadeshiko due to smothering. He couldn't believe how protective the family was of his wife. Well, that wasn't true. It was so easy to fall in love with her. It had taken, in fact, no effort at all, and only a little effort to buy a ring and take her to wife.

And now he would effortlessly love her forever, until death do them part. But he didn't want to consider death until they were both old and gray, until after he had danced with Sakura at her wedding and Nadeshiko had kissed him for the ten-millionth time. When they were old they could think about what came after they laid their bodies down. He kissed the top of her head and allowed himself the selfish wish that he might die before she did, so that he would be spared the pain of losing her. Then immediately he took it back. He didn't want his beloved to suffer.

"I just want you to know that I love you, okay? And the kids. If I die, I want you to know that I'll love you even after that," Nadeshiko said. Gently he slid his fingers up to her face and stroked her cheek, then kissed her lips.

"I love you too, baby," he said. Comforted, she shut her eyes, and they both fell asleep.
