Excerpt: Tomoyo stands in the doorway, waiting for Sakura and knowing that her girlfriend won't be appearing any time soon.

Tomoyo stands in the doorway, waiting for Sakura and knowing that her girlfriend won't be appearing any time soon. She's always running late. But Tomoyo is particularly excited about this fashion show and she calls down the hallway after Sakura.

"Hurry up!" She is smiling, indulgent. She knows that Sakura will come when she is ready.

Sakura emerges from the bedroom dressed in a cotton-candy-pink bra and panties, her face halfway made up. She pulls a look at Tomoyo, who giggles.

Who would have guessed?

Four years earlier, Tomoyo stood on Sakura's doorstep with a similar feeling of anticipation (and an additional feeling of pre-loss, of rejection-readiness).

"I love you," she said, when Sakura opened the door, and this time, Sakura understood what she meant.

"I'm still getting over Syaoran, and I don't think this is a good time for me right now," Sakura said, inviting Tomoyo in for tea. Tomoyo nodded and the shimmer in Sakura's eyes gave her hope. Who could guess?

*

Three years earlier, Tomoyo was adjusting Sakura's dress, pins in her mouth, attempting to fix the bodice without feeling up Sakura. Sakura reached up and clutched Tomoyo's hands, shyly pressing them to her breasts.

"I love you too," Sakura whispered, and she'd never said it like this before. The pins fell out of Tomoyo's mouth. She'd never have guessed.

*

Sakura throws a yellow cotton dress on over her underwear and checks her hair in the mirror. Tomoyo is still waiting in the doorway. She smooths down her lilac purple sheath dress and takes Sakura's hand when they step out onto the street.

Who would have guessed, four years earlier? Life gives all kinds of twists and surprise endings, as long as you're willing to be your own prince.
