Excerpt: Wherever his memories were going, his soul wouldn't follow.

"Goodbye," he whispered into the crook of her neck, desperately kissing as though he could take the taste of her skin with him into the next life. He wanted to take something with him into that uncertainty. Wherever his memories were going, his soul wouldn't follow. This was certainly goodbye. He hugged her close, but she was stiff in his arms. After a moment, he pulled back and looked at her. Her eyes were damp.

"You're supposed to kiss me first," she said, her voice catching, but the word had already been said and after a moment she walked away.
