Excerpt: "I haven't even cracked the code on the first sigil, darling. Yue will never forgive you for this, you know."
The street was loud. Brightly colored stalls and vendors competed for the attention of passersby. The man walking down this street looked no different than the dozens of others choking the market, except for his spectacles, which marked him as a member of society rich enough to own glasses.
In fact, he was different than the other people thronging the road for a much more exciting reason than his spectacles. He alone knew exactly what he was looking for.
He strode past men hawking all manner of services and objects. Some of the more legitimate fortune-tellers fell silent as he passed, but only for a moment.
He stopped suddenly and ducked into an alley between a carpet seller and a purveyor of fine perfumes. The woman sitting on a crate in this alley had skin much finer than this desert climate would allow, skin much paler than the copper tan of the country's natives.
"Fortune-telling," she said lifelessly, as if she didn't care. She looked up from the card she was twirling idly between her fingertips.
"You," Clow said firmly. A slow grin spread across Yuuko's face.
"How long did it take you to break that one?" she asked.
"I haven't even cracked the code on the first sigil, darling. Yue will never forgive you for this, you know." He seemed more embarassed than angry. It was rare to see anger from him.
"A small price to pay," she replied, rising and brushing invisible dirt from her skirt.
"Truce?" he offered.
"Don't do it again," she said coldly. He kissed her hand and she let him lead her back to the portal home.
