Excerpt: In fact, Yukito had written a sonnet. It had taken him almost two hours to get the words and the form and the rhyme how he liked it, and he was still a little iffy about the seventh line, but it was done.

It was a silly assignment: write a sonnet for English class. Most of the students barely grasped enough English to choose the correct grammar. It was a hard language to learn, and Yukito was a little worried in the back of his mind about how easily it had come to him, as though someone had learned it a long time ago and he was "remembering."

A sonnet was such a restricted form of poetry, as well. Fourteen lines, ten syllables, structured rhyme. Most English poets shunned the form. But their teacher was new and not yet disillusioned to working with high-schoolers. She thought it would be a good way to brush up on their vocabularies.

So Yukito was writing a sonnet.

In fact, Yukito had written a sonnet. It had taken him almost two hours to get the words and the form and the rhyme how he liked it, and he was still a little iffy about the seventh line, but it was done.

Write a sonnet to an imaginary lover, his teacher had further clarified, as if the sonnet itself wasn't hard enough. Yukito had done his best. He described a lover with affectionate blue eyes, dark hair, quiet demeanor.

"Are you done yet?" Touya said, and gestured to a place on the couch beside him. Yukito climbed up beside Touya on the couch and leaned into the boy's shoulder. For a moment Touya seemed to welcome the touch, and then he pulled away.

The next morning, Yuki read back over his work again, realized something, and blushed furiously. Then carefully he added all the S's to the he's.

They might have to read this aloud, after all, and he didn't want Touya to realize how he felt yet.
