I woke two days before I left for Japan, unsettled. Ruby, uncharacteristically subdued, said that I had cried all night, and muttered things.

I dreamt that she had lost, that the Cards became mere paper, and that there was nothing more to live for, my purpose void. And I had wept for her, my heir, for her loss was great.

When I boarded the plane, thoughts stirred around in my head. Already I was hers. Already I knew she wasn't mine, and that the loss of the little wolf would be too much for her.

I prayed she would win.

"Never leave me again," she said when he came back, her fingers clutched to his coat like she was drowning. He presented her a rose; she clutched that instead, not noticing or caring that the thorns bled her fingers.

Gallantly he took her hand and licked the blood away, and she shivered.

"I will never leave," he said, tossing aside memories of an unfaithful woman he had once loved. (He had thought it fate...) Sakura took his hand and led him into the night.

In any case, when magic called to magic, sometimes the pull was too strong to ignore.
