"Happy Valentine's Day."
There's a rustle as Kaho opens the card and then a long silence.
"You can unfold it," Eriol says helpfully. She does and excess glitter falls into her lap, making her sneeze. It flies everywhere, brightening her hair and her plain black turtleneck.
"It's very pink," she says doubtfully after a moment, running her finger along the edge of the construction paper heart, dislodging more glitter.
"You're going to have to be more enthusiastic than that," he chides with a gentle smile.
"What?" she asks, flummoxed. She sets the card down and he reaches for her hands, taking them in his own across the little table. There is only the two of them, after all, and a smaller table is better for playing footsie, he said with a smile when they purchased it.
"When the baby comes," he says casually. "You're going to be getting a lot more construction paper hearts."
He smiles widely and comprehension dawns. If anyone knows she is pregnant, it ought to be her. But knowing Eriol, it just happened last night or perhaps a week ago and he had one of his dreams.
Tenderly he lifts her hand and blows glitter away that had stuck to her palm. Then he kisses her.
"A boy or a girl?" Kaho says curiously. If he had a vision clear enough to give him this kind of reaction, surely he knew that.
"Not telling," Eriol says. "Though the child will of course have my eyes. You won't be able to resist."
"Never could," she says, touching her other hand to her abdomen, feeling warm and maternal. She sneezes again and the glitter scatters everywhere.
"Perhaps you can help him or her make Mommy cards?" she suggests.
"What, and convince them to add more glitter?" he says innocently, and there is nothing else to do but laugh.
Nine months later, she holds her daughter in her arms, a beautiful girl with dark blue eyes, and she knows she'll have no trouble pretending to love construction paper hearts, because she'll love everything about this baby.
