Summary: Kaho leaves him on a sharp, dark night, and her footsteps are loud as she walks away.
The world was so sharply defined the night she left. The stars were pinpoints in the velvet cloak of night and the moon produced a halo round her auburn hair. It was the first time I could remember that I felt shorter than her, literally smaller. She seemed to tower over me, unforgiving.
"Please--" I said, interrupting the night's heavy silence. The words were swallowed by wind as soon as I spoke, but I had to try.
"I can't," she said. She turned to walk away and I felt like my feet were rooted to the ground. Even if I ran after her, I knew this was it. She wouldn't come back.
I shut my eyes instead of following and listened to her measured footsteps. Her heels clicked loudly on the pavement, much louder than my protest had been. I remembered when I told her that I thought heels were romantic, even with the height disparity, and how she quietly began to wear them all the time.
My shoes were silent as I walked away, gazing up at a moon that had always quietly meant Kaho to me, even more than it meant Ruby Moon, because although my guardian had aspects of its nature, the moon was contemplative and secretive.
The stars were bright pinpoints in the sky and her footsteps faded into a darkness so sharp I thought it could cut. Certainly I was bleeding.
