Excerpt: Lapis held onto Jasper for as long as she could, her mind pushing down on Jasper's. She channeled her rage and frustration and worry into the fusion, and she liked, for a long moment, hearing Jasper scream into her brain.
Lapis held onto Jasper for as long as she could, her mind pushing down on Jasper's. She channeled her rage and frustration and worry into the fusion, and she liked, for a long moment, hearing Jasper scream into her brain.
She had missed the water. She didn't need it the same way that humans did, but she'd always been drawn to it, back on Homeworld and on this miserable planet, which was, to its credit, mostly water. She liked the tang of the salt in her (their) mouth.
Jasper roared.
"This is what happened to me," she said to her. "A mirror, a large body of water -- it doesn't matter. Except that I picked it this time. He's just a little kid! I don't know how he got that gem." That was a useless lie, but she said so anyway.
"Rose," Jasper said, "it was her. She never came back, and this is why! Let me go!"
The fusion wavered. Lapis felt her faces split, her body tear. She wrapped herself in the water and breathed deeply. She'd never been very good at fusions. She wasn't sure how much longer she could hold on, so she kept moving her legs. She wanted to be as far out as possible when they finally split. She thought that when they did, she'd try to keep swimming and hope that Jasper didn't catch up with her.
Jasper might let her go. If she took Lapis back with her to Homeworld, the story would eventually come out that they had fused and that Lapis had had the better of it. Jasper wouldn't want that shame. She could say that the Crystal Gems sneaked up on her and won by cheating, and that was why they needed to go back to Earth and teach them a lesson they wouldn't soon forget. The thought burned in Lapis's chest. No matter what, she was only delaying the inevitable. It was like she'd told Steven on the ship -- they ought to have cooperated, because it might have been easier for them.
She didn't really believe that. It's just that it was easier to tell herself that, to pretend that there wouldn't be consequences. She'd lived in that half-state, the mirror world, for so long that she thought she'd already had her punishment. But she knew the other Gems wouldn't see it that way.
He'd broken her out and healed her gem without asking for anything in return. Lapis wasn't used to such kindness. She knew she couldn't repay him, but she was going to try.
"I will not let you go," Lapis said to Jasper. "I won't."
When Jasper yelled back, Lapis let it pass through her ears like the liquid darkness surrounding them, and she swam on into the night.
