Toph isn't sure who let the skinny guy into her office, but she makes a mental note to put that officer on desk duty for the next year. She does not have time to deal with another admirer, merchant, or any civilian personnel. Don't they realize she's trying to run a police force? Trying to catch this supposed blood-bender before the city panics further is more than a full-time job. She can't remember the last time she got a full night's sleep. She sent Lin home earlier this afternoon with an order to get some rest, but she's pretty sure her older daughter will be back on the beat by evening.
"Out," she says to the stranger, who shuffles his feet a little but doesn't leave. She reaches for the cables at her waist.
"Please, just a moment of your time, Chief Bei Fong!" the man says, holding up his hands to prove how harmless he is. Must be a nonbender; no bender would bother with the useless gesture.
"If you haven't heard, I'm kind of busy right now," she says, pushing past him to rummage through her desk. She only came in here to find her stamp; someone needed her to sign off on the pay chits for last week. She's tried to convince the bank to take an underling's signature, since it's not like she's reading the stuff herself, but they have their heads up their butts about it, so she stamps the pages. Whatever.
"And I'd like to help!" the stranger says cheerily. "Sherlock Holmes, private detective. I think I could be of great assistance to this case."
"Seriously?" Toph asks. "What kind of name is that?"
He seems to have taken her breezy insult as interest and begins talking about traditional Earth Kingdom names, which she immediately tunes out. She finds the stamp and elbows past him again towards her assistant's desk.
"I've been following the case on my own but I feel like I could make more progress if I were able to cooperate with your officers," Sherlock says behind her. "I have a number of theories about the crimes, and--"
Toph sighs. She stops walking, and Sherlock very nearly bumps into her from behind. "Look," she says finally, "we can use all the help we can get. But the second you do something to compromise this investigation, you're out on your ear. Talk to Miki, tell her to give you a temporary badge on Bei Fong orders."
"Thank you," he says, sounding almost surprised. She's almost certain she's going to regret this, but her life has always involved taking chances. They usually work out okay. How much trouble can he be?
"You won't thank me by the time this week is over," she says, but his wolfpuppy enthusiasm is kind of endearing. He's rocking up on his heels as if eager to get started, so she waves him off in dismissal.
Three days later, he shows up in her office again with a name. It's the right name, so it seems that her trust wasn't misplaced.
"Get this guy a set of armor," she says, slapping him on the shoulder, and Sherlock just asks for permission to look at her unsolved cases. She stamps the request and then goes home to sleep for sixteen hours.
When she comes back, refreshed, she finds him asleep over a file box in the storage box. She lets him snore.
