[Magic Knight Rayearth] it is not even past (Fuu/Ferio)
Title: it is not even past
Fandom: Magic Knight Rayearth
Length: 457 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Magic Knight Rayearth, Fuu/Ferio, memories
Pairing: Fuu/Ferio
Other: Post-series.
Excerpt: Ferio takes a long look around them before sitting down beside her again. His hand is on his sword. Dreams become reality here, sometimes. But hers will never happen again. It is the one thing she can guarantee.
Fuu cannot prevent herself from releasing the bow string. She fires again and again. Emeraude cries. Emeraude smiles. Fuu can feel the white of Emeraude's teeth against her neck. Windam reaches out for Selece and Rayearth. She cannot reach them.
Someone's hands are on Fuu's shoulders and she pushes against them in panic, trying to fling them away. Then she opens her eyes. Ferio has lifted his hands as if she's burned him. Sometimes she worries that she has, that all of the sadness lingering inside her will burst out onto the ones she loves. But he only looks concerned.
"You were having bad dreams," he says. Fuu doesn't remember falling asleep but she is gradually coming back to herself. They had sat down together on a little bench on the lawn and talked, fingers brushing at first, eventually getting the courage to hold hands. This time in Cephiro there is no need to save the world hanging over them. They can take their time.
They had watched the sun set and the moons rise and Fuu must have drifted off, leaning against him. She can smell his woody scent on her skin.
"Thank you for waking me," she says, smiling gently. "I'm sorry I startled you."

"It's all right," he says, reaching for her hand again. She gives it to him. It is quite bright outside, with one moon rising and the other high in the sky. The dew is silver on the ground. She can hear a night animal coo in the distance. He doesn't ask her what she was dreaming about. He knows.
"How have your lessons been going?" Fuu asks. Ferio ducks his head a little. Fuu laughs. Clef is a difficult taskmaster. Now that she is having lessons with him again, she knows this is true. Even when no lives are on the line, he presses everyone to do their best. She thinks she rises to it, but Ferio struggles. He never expected to do much to help with running the country.
"I thought that learning Cephiro's history was tough. Fahren has had so many dynasties that even Master Clef can't keep track of all of them," he says.
She suspects that Clef does, to avoid offending Lady Aska in any way, but she can sympathize. She lets the conversation dance on from there until Umi calls from the castle doors and they rise to go in for a late dinner.
They bring their memories in with them, out of the night.
