Excerpt: The Eighth Doctor looked at his older self. The green velvet was not particularly subtle, but it looked good on him, emphasizing his strong physique and narrow waist. He had always liked this self of his -- confident, a take-charge man with a strong feeling of injustice that propelled him ever forward.

"Finally!" the Third Doctor said with some satisfaction as he adjusted his ruffled cuffs. "I knew I couldn't have lost all my sense of style forever."

The Eighth Doctor looked at his older self. The green velvet was not particularly subtle, but it looked good on him, emphasizing his strong physique and narrow waist. He had always liked this self of his -- confident, a take-charge man with a strong feeling of injustice that propelled him ever forward. He'd had a quieter life, perhaps, than some of the others, with few chances to leave Earth. And how that had chafed!

Sometimes in the darker nights, the Eighth Doctor wondered if he shouldn't have fought so hard to go. Which was silly of course, because then when would he have met Leela and Ace, Peri and Charley, and the many other humans he kept in his hearts still, knowing he'd probably never see most of them again.

"I take it you've just made the acquaintance of our sixth regeneration then," the Eighth Doctor said, with a hint of a smile. He couldn't say much for the Sixth Doctor's costume either, but the brashness on his back was as strong as any shield.

"And so rude!" the Third Doctor agreed with a sniff. "Mid-lives crisis, perhaps, you do seem to have settled down all right."

The Eighth Doctor made a note not to show the Third Doctor his TARDIS, certain he'd say the same thing. It should be a surprise to look forward to... Relatively speaking. (The Eighth Doctor was of course inordinately fond of her that way, and Grace had assured him that the visible steel and vibrant lighting were very "in." He liked the idea of being in somewhere.)

"Here's hoping," he said to the Third Doctor. "But about the Daleks--"

"Yes, yes," the Third Doctor said. It seemed that the rest of his selves had finished making their introductions and were also getting down to the problem at hand. Well, the primary problem. How they were all going to get back to their respective timelines could wait until those timelines weren't guaranteed destruction.

"Really would have hoped I would have sorted them out by now," the Third Doctor said, shaking his head, but nonetheless he bent to his calculations, the Eighth Doctor offering suggestions along the way.
