Joan hadn't known Sherlock when they were both attending Hogwarts - he was a vibrant Gryffindor Quidditch player and she a Ravenclaw from an entirely different social class (and nearly a Slytherin as well, like her parents had wanted - if anyone had asked, she could have traced her Pureblood heritage back for more generations than anyone; it's just that it didn't matter so much to her as knowledge did, and she wanted that most of all).

She met him years later, working as an independent Healer - a companion, well in demand in old families where a trip to St. Mungo's could put them in the society pages for weeks, and in gossip for longer; he'd been addicted to Firewhisky and who knew what else, the sort of things you bought down Knockturn Alley, where Joan had never been.

But he remembered her, that was the strangest thing - "Joanie!" he said, shaking her hand with a fake bluster of politeness, "you were in my year, Ravenclaw, top of the class and utterly brilliant, so you know how ridiculous this is - why don't you go now and save us the trouble?"; his face showed disappointment, not surprise, when she shook her head, so maybe he did remember her for real and the way she had of digging in her heels.
