She's so small. So light. She holds herself differently, she breathes differently, and Toph wants to brush the child's face, as if touch could reveal the part of Aang that is within her, but she doesn't. Korra shifts on her bed, curling up on one side and sticking her thumb in her mouth. Toph thinks about Lin, at home, and the way her shoulders bowed the day she learned that Aang had gone on.

"She looks like she could be Katara's granddaughter," Zuko says quietly.

"This has to be weird for Sugar Queen," Toph says. She leans against the Firelord a little. She'd punch him to show her empathy but she doesn't want him to yelp and wake the little girl.

They leave the bedroom, Zuko shutting the door carefully behind them. The White Lotus head is waiting there, his stance suggesting he's hoping for something like approval, which is completely ridiculous. Personally, Toph thinks the Avatar could benefit from having a family around her; Aang certainly appreciated it. Maybe she is getting mushy in her old age.

"She's cute," Zuko says awkwardly.

"She's the Avatar," the man says. Toph suddenly wants to punch both of them, but she refrains.

"I'll do her earthbending training," she says, instead, with a brilliant smile. "I bet I can have her metalbending by fifteen. We'll see if Sparky's up to the challenge of teaching a waterbender how to firebend." She elbows him and enjoys his flinch.

"I have a name, Toph," Zuko says; and then, "It can't be any harder than last time."

Toph snorts. They leave the White Lotus compound together, not speaking as they make their way to the airship. The world is heavier, nowadays, than it was when she was young. She misses Aang, but time keeps moving on. The toddler in that compound is proof of that.

The airship begins to hum in preparation for takeoff. They'll be back in Republic City before the dawn. Toph hates this cloak and dagger stuff, but she guesses it makes sense. The Avatar is vulnerable at this age. They don't want to advertise her location. It's just, she and Zuko agreed: they had to see her. Katara and Sokka would come around eventually.

Avatar Korra. In a few years, everyone is going to know her name. And that Toph Bei Fong herself trained her, and Firelord Zuko, and Master Katara. That she still has the support of her old friends.

That, Toph thinks, is a rather good way of 'dealing with it,' and she grins again.
