[Legend of Korra] justice may be blind (Toph & Lin gen)

Title: justice may be blind
Fandom: Legend of Korra
Length: 482 words
Prompt: Older!Toph and youngish!Lin: "You hit 'em high, I'll hit 'em low." for Joys
Pairing: Toph & Lin gen
Other: "Okay, go!" Toph said, pushing her forward, and Lin vaulted over the balcony railing, hooking her metal cords into the wall to ease her fall. The fight was over in seconds.

Lin Bei Fong was crouched down in her mother's shadow. Toph's hand was on her upper arm. Toph wore a calculating expression. She was carefully pressed back against the wall where no one passing by would see her.

"You know what to do, right?" Toph said again. Lin rolled her eyes. She was ten, and Mom had explained the drill to her at least five times already. But Mom couldn't read expressions (even though she always seemed to know when Lin was making faces), so she said, "Yeah," really quietly, clutching her fist.

"Okay, go!" Toph said, pushing her forward, and Lin vaulted over the balcony railing, hooking her metal cords into the wall to ease her fall. The fight was over in seconds. Lin had the victim cuffed, and Toph had tangled his feet in the remains of a nearby barrel, the rusty metal holding his ankles together.

The man gave a long-suffering sigh. "Okay, Toph, you proved your point," Aang said. "Metalbending is perfect for police work. I still don't think you should exclude non-benders from the tryouts, though."

"I won't exclude them," Toph said, "but if they can't keep up, well... there are plenty of desk jobs."

Aang squirmed uncomfortably. There weren't far off a main street here, and there were people pausing to stare.

"Would you let me out, Lin?" he said hopefully.

"All right, Twinkletoes," she said, after some consideration. Her hands were deft on the restraints. Aang rubbed his wrists a little. She was sure it was for show, because she had been careful not to make them too tight.

"You came out of nowhere," he said in amazement. Lin pointed up at the balcony. Aang put a hand warmly on her shoulder.

"This is quite a kid you have here, Toph," he said. "I never would have thought an earthbender would learn to fly."

Toph grinned. "That's my girl." Then suddenly, she sobered.

"There's something going on nearby," she said. "I just felt a bunch of people start running. Which way, Lin?"

Toph knew very well which was to go. She was always testing Lin's skills, making sure she stayed sharp. Lin pressed one bare foot into the dirt and said, "West."

The three of them took off without any further argument, Aang on an air scooter and the two earthbenders by earth-skating. Even as they ran, Lin thought about hooking her cords into the high corners of houses, swinging around without having to avoid foot traffic. Sometimes her mom said that Aang had been too much of an influence on her -- Lin loved flying more than any earthbender Toph had ever met. But she always smiled when she said it.

"Here's the plan," Toph said as they hurried. "Lin hits 'em high, I hit 'em low, and you stand and watch the masters, Twinkletoes."

Aang laughed, and helped them catch the robber anyway.
