[Avatar] repair and repent (Toph & Aang gen)
Title: repair and repent
Fandom: Avatar
Length: 525 words
Prompt: Toph/Aang, vase, for
moedohl
Pairing: Toph & Aang gen
Other: n/a
Excerpt: Toph moves so well through life that sometimes Aang forgets that she's blind. And he's not the only one. So it surprises him when she runs into the sidetable, and he watches the vase on it wobble in a sort of slow-motion horror.
It is probably not a good idea to play tag in the palace. Aang will remember that for later.
Toph moves so well through life that sometimes Aang forgets that she's blind. And he's not the only one. So it surprises him when she runs into the sidetable, and he watches the vase on it wobble in a sort of slow-motion horror. Surely she would catch it?
She doesn't, and the pieces shatter all over the carpeted floor. (Oh, right. No wonder she was having trouble "seeing" where she was going. The doilied feet of the table don't help either, when he tests his own seismic sense. Aang isn't sure who decorated Zuko's palace, but they really could use an update.)
"That sounded valuable," Toph says, crouching down to examine the pieces with her fingers. He crouches down beside her.
"It looked like it was about five hundred years old," Aang volunteered glumly. "I should have caught it."
Toph shrugs. She fits a couple of the larger shards together in her hands and runs her thumb down the crack. In amazement Aang sees how well the pieces seal. It's like they were never broken.
And then she hands them to him.
"This vase has an ugly design on it, doesn't it?" she asks, brushing her fingers over another piece.
"I think it's supposed to be--" Aang squints at it. "A fisherman, maybe?"
"Well, it is now. I need your eyes, Twinkletoes. That will make this go faster. Find me the next piece that fits the picture," she demands.
Aang picks carefully through the shards to find the fisherman's rod, and he holds it up to larger piece he has in his hands, positioning it properly. Toph's clever fingers seal it back in place. It's fascinating to watch.
"Can you teach me how to do that?" he blurts out. She grins, blowing her hair out of her eyes.
"Sure thing, Twinkletoes. But it's probably better to start with cheaper pots when we do that. Hurry up, someone might have heard the crash."
They piece the vase together in record time, Aang guiding Toph's hands, breathing together in the privacy of their mistake. When they've finally finished, Toph stretches and smiles the smirk of getting away with something.
"There, good as new."
Aang doesn't mention that they accidentally put the fisherman's hand on upside down before he realized. It looks good enough from a distance, anyway. She hauls him to his feet and drapes her arm around his shoulder companionably. She whistles innocently as a guard comes around the corner and is surprised to run into the Avatar and his friend. The man bows respectfully and almost flees as he walks away.
Aang would be sad that the man is frightened, but Toph just sighs in accomplishment. "My reputation is spreading," she announces. "Now, come on, let's go break some cheap clay pots so I can show you this technique. It's not too difficult."
"Okay, Sifu Toph!" Aang says cheerfully, and they go down the hall and turn the corner, carefully avoiding any more furniture.
