If he could use magic, this war would be done. He sees the way that the mashin move, a second skin to girls unskilled in combat, and he wants that ability. His mecha is the most advanced in all of Autozam, but it is still more cumbersome than the tons of metal and magic that they fight from. He has spent hours in the cockpit, learning how to turn on a hair's-breadth, but they have a bond with these mashin that he can never mimic.

But if he had one, this fight would be over. He would be installed as Pillar already, sleeping away whatever sins he would have committed to get there. Magic does not work in Autozam; the common explanation is that the technology has crowded it out, but the more accurate one is that no one in Autozam believes it's worthwhile. They can duplicate any of the little tricks that Cephiro or Fahren or Chizeta produce. They can make illusions and they can create shields and devices that split fire. But all of those things are missing something: the heart that is in all magic, that drives all similar power.

No one at home believes in Eagle's mission, not really, despite the bright send-off and the parade he'd led. Even his father thinks this is his opportunity to die honorably, in battle, instead of from his disease. (They could magic it better here, perhaps. He isn't sure. He won't ask.)

The mecha rocks around him, and teenage girls shout about justice and defenses and truth. The truth is, he might have been able to win this, but only if they hadn't came. He's seen the fire in Hikaru's eyes. He's never felt that passionately about anything in his life, and this isn't even her country she's defending.

Or maybe it is. Maybe he should give in to the inevitable. But the core of an Autozami man is steel, the strongest steel manufactured, so he keeps fighting.

And he keeps hoping, because that magic is available to everyone.
