[Discworld] stay (Carrot/Angua)
Title: stay
Fandom: Discworld
Length: 352 words
Prompt: comment_fic: Discworld, Carrot/Angua, he bought her a collar one day
Pairing: Carrot/Angua
Other: n/a
Excerpt: She pulls the collar out, noting the nice leatherwork and the jingly tags. One says ANKH-MORPORK CITIE WATCH and the other says PROPERTY OF, ANGUA VON UBERWALD.
Carrot has the good grace to look a little embarrassed when Angua opens the box. She pulls the collar out, noting the nice leatherwork and the jingly tags. One says ANKH-MORPORK CITIE WATCH and the other says PROPERTY OF, ANGUA VON UBERWALD. They are nicely engraved; clearly dwarf work.
"I thought -- well, the thing is, there's a Leash Law in the city, it's part of the Domestic and Domesticated Animals (Care and Protection) Act of 1673, and I know you're good at avoiding trouble, but this would make it even easier. I thought. I got a really nice deal on it from that metalwork shop on Short Street," Carrot says.
Angua turns the collar over in her fingers. She did take some of Gaspode's advice to heart: the less ridiculous parts. And she has been planning to get a collar, and maybe just pinning her badge to it. No one looks twice at a collared dog that isn't savaging their neck, and Angua does her best to avoid savaging anyone.
It's a beautiful collar, really, and she wonders how to explain to him that the connotations of giving this to your girlfriend are a little different than... well. Nobby would be sniggering if he found out. She makes a mental note to be sure he never does.
"Do you like it?" Carrot says hopefully. "I made them promise -- no silver."
It is be much harder in Ankh-Morpork to find silver than to find gleaming silver substitutes, but it is a nice gesture. She lifts her hands and clips it around her neck. It fits perfectly, just loose enough for her thicker wolf neck. She isn't surprised.
"Thanks," she says, and smiles. It's hard to disillusion Carrot when he's so earnest. And he could have put his own name on it instead. It wouldn't have occurred to him, because he's not that kind of guy. He'd never think about owning her. That matters.
Her collar jingles as they go out into the street, and she doesn't take his arm. Instead, they proceed down the lane to work, and no one takes a second look.
