He's never seen so much sand. This is a planet of sand, of people fighting wearily against drowning in the drifts.

Obi-Wan doesn't remember much about his homeworld, but there was grass there. There was life. He wonders what will become of Luke Skywalker, growing up in a place like this. Will he be beaten down by the harsh suns, and tired in his youth? Will he become hard, all sharp edges, like Anakin could be at times? Anakin, even with all of his faults, was a survivor. And it was a planet like this that had made him so.

Obi-Wan has crossed the galaxy so many times that he quit counting. He never thought that he'd end up somewhere like Tatooine, with its unchanging, heavy landscape. Even the sky seems to struggle to hold itself up.

But this is romantic thinking, the kind that Obi-Wan does not often indulge in. He only allows himself to do so as he is, at the same time, negotiating purchase of a small homestead. It is near enough to the Lars farm that Obi-Wan can keep track of the boy, but far enough away that he can have the necessary privacy. He doesn't think the Empire will look this far for him, and he doesn't believe that they know about the twins, or he'd be dead already. Nonetheless.

Each morning he rises while the first sun is just beginning to slip over the horizon, and he sweeps the sand from his step and watches the day begin. There is sand in his bed, and sand in his clothes, and this doesn't really bother him; it takes much more to irritate a Jedi.

Perhaps, he thinks, Luke will grow up as a part of this place, and he will never have to leave. Maybe that would be best for everyone.

He goes back inside.
