Himawari is always a little surprised to see Yuuko outside of the shop. She never seems to fit well into the world. It's not that she gets second looks for what she wears -- because most of the time, it seems like people don't even see Yuuko passing. It's that somehow Yuuko manages to be more real than everyone else. Himawari can't explain it.

She likes Yuuko, though. Yuuko will not hesitate to touch her, even knowing what Himawari is. (In fact, Himawari suspects that Yuuko has known all along, ever since they first met.) Himawari's bad luck cannot affect Yuuko, and Himawari would like Yuuko just for that, but she also sees the way that Watanuki looks to Yuuko, and the way Yuuko cares about him too, although she tries to hide it. (She can't hide it from Himawari: Himawari has made a career out of hiding her feelings to keep other people safe.)

So, "Yuuko-san!" she calls out, waving, and Yuuko looks up from her contemplation of a fruit stall. Normally Watanuki does the shopping, as Himawari understands it, but normally Watanuki is not laid up in Yuuko's bed, fighting for his life. Nothing is normal right now, despite the sunny day and the fact that she went to school this morning with her hair hanging down her back, learning math and English like those are the things that matter.

Yuuko smiles. She's wearing a black tank top that fits her like a second skin, and her skirt is wine-colored and flowing. She does not look like a housewife shopping -- Himawari doesn't think that's possible -- but perhaps like a strange college student, contemplating the cost of oranges with her last few yen. If you don't look closely, anyway.

"Himawari-chan," Yuuko says. She doesn't say how Watanuki is doing, and that's okay. Himawari knows that Yuuko will tell her when he wakes up. And Himawari could check, if she wanted. The shop has the same too-real look that Yuuko does, and Himawari often touches the gate when she walks by. She doesn't go back in yet. It's not time.

"Would you like to get some ice cream, Yuuko-san?" Himawari asks, tilting her head to one side and feeling her hair slide with her movement, tracing little sparks of pain across her back.

Yuuko returns the orange to the stall with all formality, and then she grins.

"I thought you'd never ask," she says. "Oh -- and I like your hair like that."

"Thanks," Himawari says, for so much more than the compliment, and she bows.
