[Young Wizards] understand the cosmos but never the ego

Title: understand the cosmos but never the ego
Fandom: Young Wizards
Length: 256 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Author's Choice, Author's Choice, Slow Life (Michael Swanwick)
Pairing: slight Dairine/Roshaun
Other: Spoilers for Wizards at War.

Excerpt: Dairine's 'children' are as stubborn and single-minded as she can be, at times.

They search.

Dairine's 'children' are as stubborn and single-minded as she can be, at times. When she asks them to look for Roshaun, they are working on the problem almost before she can complete the sentence. Spot feeds them any information that they need, and they look. They do not tire, or get bored, or lose their way. They are indefatigable. Dairine is in awe of it sometimes. She dreams, and when she dreams, she dreams quicklife dreams, and they tell her what they've seen. Roshaun is not here, or here, or here. He is not in the spaces between these atoms or on this star.

She gets discouraged, sometimes, but they continue looking, nonetheless. And when summer comes, she packs up her pup tent and follows, as much as she can between her other wizarding duties. It's been quiet, recently. The Lone Power is resting, perhaps, from the Hesper's blow, or maybe the Powers think Dairine deserves a little break.

But a break is just more time to chase, and she strides the gaps between worlds, speaks to creatures without mouths and without individual concept. The quicklife are right beside her, ballast in the fight.

No one in the universe is as stubborn as Dairine Callahan. She may be slow in comparison to her searchers, but she looks deep. It doesn't hurt to be a little slow sometimes.

(After all, she wouldn't want Roshaun to think she'd gone to so much trouble. He might start assuming things again.)
