[Hercules] careful how you tread it (Hercules/Megara)
Title: careful how you tread it
Fandom: Disney's Hercules
Length: 320 words
Prompt: Given a fandom, I will write a high school AU: Hercules
Pairing: Hercules/Megara
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "You've done more than enough to earn your scholarship," Herc's dad said, clapping Herc on the shoulder familiarly.
"You've done more than enough to earn your scholarship," Herc's dad said, clapping Herc on the shoulder familiarly. "Exemplary performance on that field! I'm already placing bets on your first game next year. There's no way the Mice won't succeed with you on the team!"
The rest of the family crowded round to congratulate him, shaking his hand and beaming. It was everything that Herc had ever wanted -- acceptance. He'd proven he was worthy of a good college. He'd found his future and earned the respect of his family.
But all he could think about in this moment was the girl waiting for him on the fringe of the room, near the door. Meg had declined to meet everyone, saying that this was sure to be a family occasion. But he'd promised to give her a ride, so she'd reluctantly followed him indoors.
She knew where she was going next year too. And it wasn't to the most prestigious school in the country. She'd go to community college and work hard for more jerks like Hades, and maybe she and Herc would write or talk on the phone once in a while, but eventually they'd drift apart.
And that was unacceptable.
In that moment, all of Hercules's determination and drive refocused. There really were more important things than your diploma.
"Dad," he said, attempting to extract himself from the group of well-wishers, "Dad, I don't think I'm going to go to WDCU. I'm going to stay here, with Meg."
He expected argument or reprisal. Instead, his father's eyes met his mother's, and Zeus smiled.
"Young love," he said. "Did I tell you how I met your mom in high school?"
Herc wanted the story eventually, but he was more focused on reaching Megara and sweeping her up in a hug.
Priorities.
