[Mulan] strikeout (Mulan/Shang)

Title: strikeout
Fandom: Mulan
Length: 380 words
Prompt: Given a fandom, I will write a high school AU: Mulan
Pairing: slight Mulan/Shang
Other: n/a

Excerpt: She was barely conscious when she was dragged out of the medical tent into the blinding light of the baseball field.

She was barely conscious when she was dragged out of the medical tent into the blinding light of the baseball field. The game had ended some time after she'd passed out -- at least there was that. Her ribs were a low but powerful ache under her arms, and the way her heart was hammering almost made them seem worse.

"We must report her," Chi-Fu said snippily. She'd recognize his voice anywhere, despite the distraction of her blinding headache.

A shadow loomed over her. She glanced up and met Shang's eyes for a moment. His were hard and irritated, not at all like the comraderie he'd shown her once she became a useful part of the team. He pulled the baseball cap lower over his face, hiding his expression.

"She made the catch," Shang said finally. "Probably would have broke my elbow if it'd hit me at that angle. Let's just leave it at that."

He tossed something at her -- her jersey, ripped buttons and all. She grabbed it and threw it around her shoulders as the wind blew through. Somehow, she was very cold.

"But Captain," Chi-Fu wheedled, but Shang had already turned to walk away. His uniform was sweat-stained and dirty -- he hadn't bothered to change since the game had ended, even though the deserted stands said it had been quite a while. Maybe he'd been worried about her. At least, until the medic pulled up her shirt and revealed her secret. Then she was useless to him. A girl couldn't play on the boys' team, no matter how good she was. Mulan scowled at the grass.

"Leave it," she could hear as they walked off the field. "We'll find another shortstop."

She wasn't going to cry. Not until she got back to the locker room, at least. She couldn't. But she sat there in the dust for ten minutes until she became composed enough to get up and leave the field.

It took some time to let her dreams die. It would take longer than it had already.

And she couldn't imagine how awkward it would be in biology tomorrow, now that Shang knew that she didn't have a male twin.
