[Emelan] the sea pronounces something (Daja gen)

Title: the sea pronounces something
Fandom: Emelan
Length: 271 words
Prompt: Given a character, I will write something about them set during precanon: Daja
Pairing: Daja gen
Other: n/a

Excerpt: Daja learned to walk on a rolling deck, and her mother laughed when Daja first stepped foot on solid ground and began to stagger back and forth like an inexplicably drunken toddler.

Daja learned to walk on a rolling deck, and her mother laughed when Daja first stepped foot on solid ground and began to stagger back and forth like an inexplicably drunken toddler.

"We all do it," she soothed when the girl finally came tumbling down and let out a wail. She picked Daja up and dusted her off. "Be proud to be a member of Fifth Ship Kisubo. We spend more time at sea than not."

Daja's cradle had been a ship's hammock, and she was rocked to sleep by the gentle waves. She knew all the proper names for the ropes by the age of seven -- it was a standard part of her education. This was her home and this was her destiny. Even when she began to sneak around to watch smiths at work, she'd never seriously considered abandoning what she'd been born to. She knew where she belonged -- on a ship she knew as well as her own body, with a crew who loved her, family by blood and by choice. Her brother held her in his lap and taught her how to tie strong knots. She held tight to her aunt's hand, eyes wide with wonder as she watched her mother bargain, and she learned all the tricks.

She was a Trader. And that was what Niko or any kaq wouldn't understand. She had to learn to walk twice.

She didn't want to learn to walk alone.
