[Tortall] a day brightener (Daine gen)
Title: a day brightener
Fandom: Tortall (The Immortals)
Length: 251 words
Prompt: Given a character/pairing, I will write something about them set during precanon: Daine
Pairing: Daine gen
Other: n/a
Excerpt: She pressed her face into Cloud's neck and the mare snorted a little. I don't know why you let it bother you, the horse said.
The People didn't care that she didn't know who her father was. Normally she didn't mind much either, but after a difficult day in town, Daine always wanted to go home and talk to someone who had more serious concerns than her parentage, someone planning for the Big Cold or worried aobut the safety of their nest.
She pressed her face into Cloud's neck and the mare snorted a little. I don't know why you let it bother you, the horse said.
"I don't know," she mumbled. "It's as if they think they're better just because their father is a carpenter or a smith."
I bet their fathers can't talk to horses, Cloud said, sounding so self-satisfied that Daine had to laugh. Cloud tossed her head in a laugh of her own.
"I don't know if mine could," she pointed out.
You know what I mean, Daine, Cloud answered. There's no need to feel sorry for yourself. You have better things to do.
"Like feed you apples, I suppose," Daine answered wryly, her mood clearing anyway. She listened to birds courting in a nearby tree as they passed by, and watched as a squirrel darted into the road in front of them, courting danger from Cloud's hooves before deciding to finish his journey. It was spring. Cloud was right -- she had better things to do.
Putting the other children from her mind, Daine made her way home. She always had friends here, in the forest and in their simple cottage. Who needed more?
