Summary: How the Kyoshi Warriors came to be.

The first one is her daughter.

Kyoshi goes outside every morning without fail, rain or shine, to practice with her fans. She has been doing it for a long time, ever since her brother handed her the first one he'd made and suggested that she put it up on the wall as a decoration. He'd designed it to get his master's credit in blacksmithing, and she is unsurprised that he received it; the fan is not too heavy, but it is strong, and it furls and unfurls with surprising ease.

He is surprised when she asks him if he could put an edge on it. And make another one. Kyoshi has seen many things on her journey to become the Avatar. The attendants to the Earth Queen used to be trained in fan combat, in order to better protect their mistress. Every woman can carry a fan.

That might come in handy.

She adapts the fighting styles she knows to make something all her own, a Kyoshi style. She fights earthbenders and airbenders, straight swordsmen and unweaponed martial artists. She works with her brother to invent a shield and to alter the fans as she sorts out the proper balance and weight.

And so, four years after she begins, she puts two fans in the hands of her eldest daughter, the one who can't earthbend. She paints her face because a warrior can frighten with her makeup. And she begins to teach her that she can fight just as well without bending. She can go anywhere a sword wouldn't be allowed. She can win.

She teaches her daughter in the early morning light, no matter the weather, and when others come to join them, she doesn't protest. She paints their faces and teaches them to be warriors. She teaches them that any woman can be a warrior, and when she leaves Kyoshi to travel for Avatar duties, they teach each other. When she returns a year later, they present her, shyly, with a uniform and a headdress. She tries to convince them not to use her name, a little embarrassed, but no one listens.

They stand with her, beside her, and they are strong, just like she is.

Of course they should be called Kyoshi Warriors.
