[Polychromatic/Avatar] feeling otherwise impenetrable (Toph/Aang)

Title: feeling otherwise impenetrable
Fandom: Polychromatic/Avatar
Length: 742 words
Prompt: [livejournal.com profile] polybending prompt meme: Toph/Aang, ten years later
Pairing: Toph/Aang; mentions of Katara/Tyr, Sokka/Suki, Zuko/Mai
Other: Polychromatic future AU.

Excerpt: It had almost been too hot to sleep last night, even when Aang teased the breezes to help, but he wasn't surprised when he woke up pinned to the bed, with Toph breathing evenly into his neck and her arm splayed across his chest.

For six months, the Hall of the Missing went unchanged, and finally someone studying the City remarked upon it:

No one was leaving.

The deities were unhelpful, even when people asked to trade for information. Lazlo muttered something about a new entrance-only policy, and Lina told them they should be thrilled PLEASED absolutely enjoying their time here.

Some people did, some people didn't. The City adjusted. The City aged, for the first time.

It had almost been too hot to sleep last night, even when Aang teased the breezes to help, but he wasn't surprised when he woke up pinned to the bed, with Toph breathing evenly into his neck and her arm splayed across his chest. She'd thrown a leg across his too, and he wanted to laugh, remembering when she'd insisted that she hated cuddling. She'd probably say that this didn't count, either. She wasn't very good at the affectionate stuff.

But that was okay. He knew how she was. He knew her better than anybody, especially after ten years in the City. He'd seen Toph at her most vulnerable and her most angry, as well as in various states of undress, intentional and unintentional.

He shifted just a little, not willing to disturb her too much -- after all, it was the weekend and neither of them had to work today -- and she mumbled something and turned over, curling up in a way that revealed several pale inches of skin between her underwear and her tank top. He smiled a little. Toph was careful who she was vulnerable with. He was glad she trusted him that much.

Since he could move now, Aang stretched and got up, heading toward the kitchen on light feet. He went out to feed Appa and tell him good morning while the coffee was brewing, and then came back. Toph wandered in when the coffee was done, eyes only half-open. Aang handed her a mug without comment. She sighed happily, sinking into a kitchen chair and drinking it. He leaned back against the kitchen counter, watching her fondly.

"Can I marry whoever invented this?" she asked. Aang laughed.

"I think it comes from trees. Or something like that. The label says coffee beans," he answered.

"Delicious beans," Toph said. She took another sip and sighed, running her forearm along her forehead to catch the sweat she'd accumulated in the night. "It's almost too hot for coffee."

"It's too hot for anything. We should see if everybody wants to go to the beach today," Aang said, his enthusiasm rising. "We could wind-surf again!"

Toph laughed as the wind billowed through the room, attracted to Aang's excitement as he gestured a demonstration. It rustled the curtains and flirted with her calves. "You're not getting me to try that again," she said. "Maybe Snoozles. It's funny listening to him scream."

"That was only one time!" Aang protested, and Toph shrugged, a smile sliding onto her face. She began to finger-comb her hair in-between sipping coffee.

"Well, call them. I'm sure the Sugar Queen and King would be up for it. I bet Katara's actually at the beach already," she said. From her tone she thought this was ridiculous.

"They live right there," Aang pointed out. "It's not that weird. Anyway, okay. I'll call Katara and Tyr, you call Suki and Sokka, and--"

"I get Iroh, you get Zuko," Toph interrupted.

"Last time Mai yelled at me," Aang muttered. Toph got up from her chair and put her cup in the sink. She kissed him on the cheek.

"Suck it up!" she said cheerfully, disappearing back to their bedroom to get dressed and find her device.

"You're doing the dishes, then!" he called back, knowing that she'd pretend not to hear him, but probably do them anyway. They had an understanding.

He could hear her talking down the hall. "The beach, I said! --No, it was Aang's idea. Tell Suki I'm still not going to learn to swim, so quit asking. --Well, I'm not cursed. If you are, come and we'll laugh at you."

The sun was rising and the day was warming up again. It looked good to Aang. Not the life he'd thought he'd be living, but a pretty nice one nonetheless.

That was life in the City nowadays.
