Ba Sing Se sucked. It was boring and they couldn't do anything with that creepy Joo Dee dogging their steps, popping up everywhere to say not to do this or that. Toph was sick of it. The only good thing she could say for this city was that it had nice gardens, and she fully intended to take advantage of that.
For years she had slept indoors, swaddled in too many pillows and sheets, unable to anticipate trouble that her parents would say she shouldn't be anticipating. She was anticipating it now, and she wouldn't do anyone any good sleeping in a real bed tonight. She'd sleep outside, like usual, so that if there was a break in the wall, or something, she'd hear. She would sleep surrounded by rock and wake being aware of her surroundings. Now that she was used to it, she didn't know why she'd waited so long to try it.
So when everyone, frustrated by their lack of progress, decided to turn in, Toph waved a hand and went outside. She found herself a nice soft spot in the grass and threw up her tent, but then realized she had to go to the bathroom before she slept. Yawning, she got up and did her business. When she returned to her earth tent, she paused.
"...What are you doing?" she asked, flabbergasted. She knew that shape. Why was Jo Dee crouching in her tent?
Talk about creepy.
"Unauthorized structures are not permitted in Ba Sing Se, Miss Bei Fong," Jo Dee said, emerging from the cramped space. "You should sleep inside with the others."
"You're telling me no one earthbends around here?" Toph said, disbelieving and irritated. She couldn't imagine a law like that working even in Gaoling, where earthbenders fixed and changed their houses whenever they found it necessary.
"Oh, people earthbend all the time. There is our famous Dai Li, for example," Joo Dee chattered, herding Toph back towards the house. Toph called on her small reserves of patience, reminding herself that cooperating with this (ridiculous) lady and her rules was the only way for them to find out what happened to Appa. Since she hadn't been strong enough to save him herself, she could at least do her best to contribute to his rescue.
She twisted her foot to sink the earth tent back into the ground behind her, and reluctantly stepped onto the porch of the house. There, she wrenched free of the guide.
"You going to follow me into bed and read me a story, or what?" she said, too tired and frustrated to be any more polite. She heard the soft sound of shifting cloth and hair as Joo Dee bowed.
"As long as you are comfortable, Miss Bei Fong. Please, enjoy your stay," she said.
Toph waited until the woman's steps had faded before she muttered sarcastically, "I love it here already."
