[Avatar] in here to stay (Toph/Aang)
Title: in here to stay
Fandom: Avatar
Length: 300 words
Prompt:
polybending fic meme: Catch Me I'm Falling
Pairing: Toph/Aang; Katara/Aang
Other: n/a
Excerpt: Toph smacks her toes into the dirt and contemplates the fact that she keeps falling in love with people who won't belong to her.
Toph smacks her toes into the dirt and contemplates the fact that she keeps falling in love with people who won't belong to her. Sokka had at least felt like maybe, before Suki came back around, but Aang has always, always, always been Katara's. She's the one who pulled him from the iceberg, rescued him from himself a thousand times over, pulled him back from death.
Toph is just his best friend, barely even a girl in his eyes. He'll never look at her like that (and Toph doesn't see the look as much as she feels the speeding heartbeat, knows the way that he leans forward, practically leaves the ground when Katara speaks).
She doesn't say anything about it, just like she never told Sokka. The closest thing she got to that was kissing his girlfriend, and Toph isn't going to make that mistake again. Anyway, it's probably cliche to fall in love with the guy who saved the world, even if she does know him personally. She knows him well enough to realize that they probably wouldn't work, earth and air striving against each other in their characters.
She'd rather have a friend that lasted, and Aang's grip on her hand has always been firm. He bears her shoulder-punches with good grace.
So she smiles and asks when the wedding is, and tells him that he'd better not give her a part in it, because all that crying that Katara will do is going to flood the dais. And then Katara says something about not wanting Toph to have input anyway, and Sokka insists that he wants to help, and the whole announcement devolves into this familiar shouting mess. Toph leans back and smiles, her feet still pressed into the cool dirt.
It's all going to be fine.
