[Iron Man/Inception] the horse does the work and the coachman is tipped (Ariadne gen)
Title: the horse does the work and the coachman is tipped
Fandom: Iron Man/Inception
Length: 460 words
Prompt: Iron Man/Inception crossover for
sour_idealist
Pairing: Tony/Pepper assumed; mostly Ariadne gen
Other: Minor violence.
Summary: When Ariadne and Arthur go extracting from Tony Stark's mind, they find a dangerous projection indeed.
Ariadne had been in this business for long enough that she should have been wary of unusual projections, but this was a very personal business, after all, and no two marks were the same. She knew that the mark had a secretary/girlfriend, but that in itself wasn't unusual. In fact, it was more common than not among these high-roller types. She wasn't sure who did the actual work in offices where the assistant was chosen based on beauty rather than functionality. She didn't care to ask (it might have been someone like her, if she'd finished her apprenticeship and managed to join a large architectural firm, and she didn't want to see the knowing curve of Arthur's smile).
She knew that this secretary was a little more special than most, but the rest of the team was just as surprised as she was when the slight red-headed woman smiled softly and pulled a gun from her shoulder holster. She fired so fast that Ariadne had no time to react, and Ericks was down, howling and breaking the illusion. Ms. Potts wore a slight smile and another gun on an upper thigh holster.
"Militarized his secretary," Arthur breathed in Ariadne's ear, his tone admiring, before he drew his own gun, and another for Ariadne, whose cocktail dress didn't leave much room for hiding weaponry.
"There's only one of her, though!" Ariadne said, pushing over a table and crouching behind it. Arthur grabbed the table next to her and did the same. With the large number of people in the room, their strange actions were lost in the chaos that the shot had caused. That is, until a bullet punched through the thin table two inches from Ariadne's hand.
"Looks like he only needs one," Arthur answered, grimly cheerful as he jumped up to shoot back. The woman seemed unruffled as both of his quick shots missed. She just kept coming. Ariadne swallowed.
"I've seen this before!" Arthur said, raising his voice above the shouting. "Usually with bodyguards that have been with their employers for years! We shoot her and another one will appear. By concentrating all his efforts in one projection, she can be more accurate and smarter!"
"Shit, shit, shit," Ariadne said under her breath, as more shots rang out. She could hear Ericks scream again, and then he was silent. There were footsteps coming closer, the comfortable click of high heels.
"I always think the women are scarier," Arthur says, matter-of-fact, before jumping up and shoving the table into the projection's stomach. That was pretty much the end of that conversation, because they had more important things to focus on.
Ariadne would have agreed.
